This might help for the Hard-to-find hostas
https://plantinfo.umn.edu/arboretum/default.asp I haven't played with it much, but it just became available to the public and I thought I'd share the news. It doesn't give prices, but it does link to web sites. Just put "hosta" and the name in the search box. I don't know how much help it will actua...

Noreaster: A few years ago I moved to a new house and had a couple larger blues that I placed in deeper shade than they had been in. What is hard to determine is how much the decrease in size the next year was due to the move, and how much was due to the lack of sun. After a couple year they both di...

When I lived in Rochester I had a ring of common hostas around a big tree, and by mid-summer they were always in rough shape. I would mow them down, and they always came back looking great. The key is that they were mature, in shade, in good soil, well watered, and most importantly, NOT important......

Yes, that is very nice for a "green hosta"... :P Lancifolia is still one of my favorites, especially the imature version... (I will often hack a piece off for a new spot just to keep it small and fresh, and people will ask what that cute little hosta is) But other than that I don't typically go for ...

Thanks for all of your thoughts, you are right that moving them ahead of time would be best. We hadn't expected to move, and once we decided to move it was too late. The good news is that we got another offer (higher than the first) and they are letting me keep the hostas. :D I can take 20 whole hos...

Just lost my house sale due to my hostas...
I am selling my house, which is one reason I haven't been around this summer. Just too sad to be loosing years of effort to another move... :( We had an offer that was going back and forth for three weeks, and they had sent us a counter that included me taking a "small division of each hosta variety...

We are doing the opposite this summer, moving to a lake spot not far from where we currently live. I haven't been around here much with all the crazyness in our lives this year... It pains me to move them all again, they are just settling down from their move three years ago. I'll try and post some ...

After some research last night, I went shopping today. I looked for any of the listed items, but had little luck around here. I would probably have to go to the Cities or at least Eau Claire to find a better selection. Since I didn't have time for that, I purchased the only thing on my list that I f...

Wow! Thanks for all the great suggestions. It will take a while to research many of the suggestions and find one of them locally, but it sure is nice to have some names to start with! I really love that Japanese Maple, my mother-in-law just got one and they do look sharp. Not sure how it would do in...

Small tree for shade?
I have a spot in my hostas that is desperate for some height.(Like something 5-10 feet tall) It is almost total shade, and I would love something to add color, maybe blossoms in the spring. I thought of something like a crab apple, but don't want the mess and don't know if it could tolerate the shad...

I keep thinking of doing this, but haven't yet. My list is quite small, and may be missing a half dozen from the end of last year, but I'll post it anyway. :) Allen P.
