Re: Doggone critters!!!
My deer have been relentless. I've never had deer damage so much this year. Granted, I've never seen it this dry and so HOT. There's nothing for them to eat. I sprayed everything w Liquid Fence, left for vacation and came back to a yard of green stalks. That, coupled with a week in the 100s and no w...

To rake or not?
We're in the midst of a heat wave - more June than March like- with a lot of rain and temps in the upper 70s/80s for the next week. Yesterday I noticed the Bleeding Hearts were way up and the eyes of one of my Sagae tipping through the leaves. I left all the leaves on my beds last fall - do I rake t...

Re: Hallson Gardens 2011 Get Together in Cement City, MI JUL
Sadly I have to be a last minute cancellation.
I have an infection in my left eye, which is making vision out of it near impossible, which makes driving not so fun - and probably not so safe on I-94. So I will have to take a rain check until next year.

Very cool. Can you post pictures of it after it's been in the sun?
Did Colin name it after the band Sublime?
I will try and post a picture of that dark green seedling I was telling you about yesterday.

Re: Potted Hostas
Hi Mike - For at least the last 10 years I've ended up with homeless hostas that haven't made their way from the pot to garden - this year is no exception!- I've just dug a holding bed in my woods, placed the pots there with the excess dirt around them and leaf mulch on top. No problems. I did a bun...

Re: H. Seducer anyone?
Just one last post to end this - I was at the nursery yesterday where I picked up Seducer earlier this year as they were having a huge sale. The remaining Seducers that they have for sale look just like mine - the edges of the older leaves are all desicated, while the new growth is fine. So I'm goin...

Re: Hallson gathering group photo
Thanks Paul! I will be making it this weekend for a BBQ. I also passed the recipe on to two other people who I know will love it! Will keep you posted on the seedlings. Bad gardener me - they are still in their pots in my holding bed - it's simply been too dang hot and I'm tired of coating myself wi...

Re: Hallson gathering group photo
I had a great time meeting lots of new people in person. What a lot of fun! I had a hard time not coming home with a bunch of new plants, but I did manage to get some nice ones in the trade and score some of Paul's seedlings from the back of his car. Of course like most potlucks there was an overabu...

Re: Do you have a favorite newly acquired plant this year?
My new additions that I am really liking are Fat Cat, Spartacus and Orion's Belt. For Orion's Belt, I don't know if it's because of where I have it planted or what, but the dark green leaf with really wide white margins just stands out. Fat Cat is very gold and striking. I can't wait to to see it af...

Glad to hear you have a lot of those for next year. I really liked seeing those in person at the gathering and it's on my list for next year! Great job Chris!

Re: H. Seducer anyone?
I'm going to go with the idea that it's a new hosta for me and withhold judgement until next summer. I did buy it because of pictures I saw of it and the very cool color variagation. So - will have to see what happens next year - provided of course we don't have the same type of wacky weather - thou...

H. Seducer anyone?
I got H. Seducer earlier this year. It's planted in mostly dappled shade, which gets some direct sun ~ 2 pm for an hour or so. I noticed yesterday when I was weeding that the margins on the leaves - except for the couple new ones have "burned" away, kind of like the desication that Frances Williams ...

Looks like a Stinkhorn, or Phallus rubicundus . I had one of those a couple years ago in my compost pile.
It was "stinky" too!

Re: Leaf Show Follow Up
Looks like you've got the beginning of some future hostaholics Mike! Looks like they had a great time. My older one isn't into hostas so much (but he's great at weeding for spending money & can tell seedlings from weeds) but my younger one can point out names and ID from a distance. I think that was...

Re: Hallson Gardens summer get together!
I am going to try to get over there this year, since I've probably got one of the shorter drives to get there - for the last ones it seemed that every summer we've been gone that weekend. It would be fun to meet people in person. Gamekeeper - the Arrowhead Alpines I'm familiar with is in Fowlerville...

Re: Secret Trade Received!! 2010
The mail just came - and thank you very much Jenna L. (not sure of your Hallson's name)! Jenna sent First Mate, Emerald Tiara, Silver Threads & Golden Needles, and Herifu. All are new to my garden. Now I have to do a little research to see where to put them. Thanks again for sharing some of your gar...

Re: secret trade sent out
Mine are headed to the post office this pm... of course I had them soaking last night in the shade and my stupid deer decided to snack on one of them, so my apologies to my tradee for that one... the others didn't seem to be appetizing.

Eola Sapphire - can anyone with a Hosta Finder look for me?
I'm trying to buy Eola Sapphire for a fellow hostaholic as a surprise housewarming present for her new house. She saw it on the National tour here last summer and I want to surprise her with it for her new house. She's very sad about moving, so wanted to make her day a little brighter. I just got ou...
