Re: Sick August Moons
Actually, you got off easy. I'm down to two varieties - "Regular" and "Extra Crispy." I agree with the comments about sun, driveway heat and dryness, but there has been another factor at work here in central Ohio this year. I suspect that you may have experienced the same condition as here. WIND. We...

Try putting Korean Snow in more sun. Mine gets some mid-day sun and likes it. It doesn't burn. Hey - what do you have to lose?

Re: A question on hosta damage
I think you may be right about the rabbit. On the other hand it might be a squirrel. (Now that was helpful.) I'd keep an eye out for additional damage. If there is none, breath a sigh of relief and let the plant fix itself. A number of years ago I had a planting of a dozen or so Undulatas that a rabb...

Jaime, I don't want to be too negative, but figure on the S&S getting sunburned by the middle of the summer. I have one that's approaching 8 feet across and it just can't push enough water up to the leaves to keep them from getting burned. There's sun and then there's SUN. A lot of the folks that sa...

From the lighting in your photos, it looks like this plant is in a lot of sun. My guess is that it's sunburn. If the plant is in fact in a lot of sun, with your zone and the high temps we've been having I think the plant looks really good, all things considered. Give it plenty of water and it should...

Great pics Sue. You might want to give Satsfaction a little more room. I moved mine last fall because I thought my Sum and Substance was starting to crowd it. This year Satisfaction is on the attack. At three years old it's about 4.5 feet across. A beutiful plant with what I consider an astounding g...

Grumble... got my order today, too. Shipped just when I asked for it. Just another predictable day in my predictable life. Grumble... and of course the roots were huge. So I had to dig and dig and dig huge holes to fit them in. Grumble... and of course the plants were fresh and healthy, so I'm sure ...

Chris is in the newspaper!
Today's Columbus Dispatch has an article on the front page of the Home and Garden section on HVX. Chris is quoted prominently. Thanks, Chris, for your continued work on HVX. Here is a link to the article: http://www.dispatch.com/homegarden/homegarden.php?story=dispatch/2006/07/16/20060716-I1-03.html...

HVX on S&S has to be about the easiest to spot. Even I can do it. Those look like the several dozen S&S that one of the local Lowes had a few weeks back. I talked to one of the garden center people, but, by his attitude, didn't expect that anything would be done. After all, plants are purchased by a...

Chris, one thing I've never seen discussed is how to best sanitize those tools that hang at the end of your arms. I've always felt that a bleach solution was a little extreme for human skin, but ammonia or Lysol might be OK. I've been washing with soapy water and following up with a 90% alcohol rins...

Wolverine, R.I.P
Chris, thanks for taking a look at these, and I'm sorry that I cluttered up your sticky post. Should have started a new post to begin with, but i'll do it now (to compound the confusion). The first pic shows the puckering on a couple of leaves and you may be able to see some of the mottling. The sec...

Chris, I think you need to add Wolverine to your list. Mine is outta here. It's showing speckles and bumps and maybe a little ink bleed. Also, the color seems off. It looks like it has a little frost damage, but I think the symptoms go beyond that. In any event, discretion is the better part of valo...

Lucy, I have always considered these a weed tree. I don't find the lavender flowers particularly attractive and I think the seed capsules that hang on over the winter are positively ugly. I used to live in zone 6, where they would sometimes be winter killed, but the roots would survive. Last week I ...
