Linda, I am soooo glad to hear that you actually did have success in deterring voles with hardware cloth. My biggest fear was that we would go through all of this work .. and STILL have voles! :o Debbie, I didn't do alfalfa ... or banana peels  ... but I did mix a lot of half baked compost and ...

Vole protection and special thanks to Tundra Queen!
I need to say a very public THANKS to Tundra Queen whose beautiful hosta in raised beds gave my brain the kick start to start raising all of my beds to protect them from voles. I had made one raised bed from stone last month but this was a much bigger project and hopefully will prevent future hosta ...

Seriously, Chris. Old Faithful IS trying to eat that poor hosta. It's cannibalism I tell you!! Good to know about the registration size. I definitely am looking for the super tall so you are right - it is something to work with to start but I'll still keep in mind people's garden experiences. Either...

I've been looking up these hosta to check on the sizes and to see if I liked any of them enough to add them. Some on the list were from the list link page. I thought I would share the sizes that I found listed so that other folks could benefit. Keep in mind - I was looking for height rather than jus...

Can't thank you guys enough and duh - I should have remembered the list because I just added it as a reference for myself on my blog page. Double duh. Thanks for the pix Chris - I hope this means I can buy some of your recommendations here  I have a few of these already that are young or vole ...

Speaking of Getting High
I'm referencing the recent NPOTD of course! I need some help :-? :-? My wonderful man just installed a long desired privacy fence to block off the view of the foreclosed house next door. The section that runs along the hosta gardens is 92 feet long and there has been NO hosta there at all. Amazing, ...

Spectacular! Did I see shredded paper as mulch? Hmm... Do you have any lawn at all? I can't stand lawns (mowing not my idea of fun) and I love your stone. I am going back and forth between stone and wood mulches. Have wood mulches now but ... :-? The terracing is way cool too. Brain working in overd...

Now I just guess and think I can always move it!!! I think I am going to take photos at the end of the season to REMIND me which plants I need to move. I have a Key Lime Pie that grew up to what I expected it might be in two or three years in one season! I really don't feel like moving them in the ...

I know! Growing hosta is like musical chairs with plants. Every time I plant one that I expect to grow huge with lots of room - it turns out to be the slowest growing hosta known to man... and then when I plant them tighter ... one of them is bound to eat up its surrounding friends.  Th...

Pix from today
Just some pix of a few of the hosta that escaped vole destruction this year. Ok, so I lie a little bit. Reptilian was definitely nibbled & is smaller this year. I think I need a better camera but this one's working for now :???: Ginsu Knife: Hosta Registry - http://www.hostaregistrar.org/detail.php?...

I really like Praying Hands. I feel my greatest challenge is to find a way to integrate such a unique look with in the rest of the hosta. On its own, it's amazing and everything you said about it is right on from my perspective. Someday I'll figure it out. If anyone thinks they have a great bed that...
