Missy,
I trim mine all the time. I think they will grow to about 8 feet. I keep mine at under 3 feet. When pruned well the trunk has a kinda oriental look to it with nice curves. The new grown is bright red and looks like flowers. Great plant!! Good Luck

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Pieris_japonica I'm in Zone 5 also and I love this evergreen. The blooms are like lily of the valley and the new growth is bright red. It is so easy to care for. It's a neat and tidy plant that needs little or no care. I also like the Endless Summer Hydrangea which ...

How do I make a ficus into a bonsai?
Any advice or suggestions. I'm aware that when I prune these little trees they have a milky sap. How much should I prune at one time?

dividing plants?
I want to divide my lillies, crocosmia, shasta daisies, and blackeyed susans. Is this a good time to do so? Should I cut them down to about 10" or less? Is this the best time to amend the soil from which I'm taking them and to which they are going? Phew-------------those sure are a lot of questions....

Since I'm a newbie, I thought I'd show you some pictures of my gardens past and present.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
