Color Wheels
We all know of Mark Zilis's rating system and Bill Meyer's color wheel for blues. Are there similar ratings for greens and golds? I'm thinking specifically in terms of dark greens such as Lakeside Coal Miner contrasted with, say, pale greens such as Squash Casserole. Or golds such as Sun Power contr...

Bill- Thank you for all the great information. I do know that the Dorothy Benedict(s) in question (I should learn to use the preview button) were tissue cultures so they may have already had one year of dormancy. I will ask Bob. I also have an unnamed streaker that I was thinking of putting under th...

To plant outside or grow under lights
I have a new Dorothy Benedict--actually two new Dorothy Benedict that I got from Bob Axmear. Beautiful but small. I'm wondering whether a winter inside under fluorescent lights might be good for it since Dorothy Benedicts grow about as fast as dirt.

To Chris and everyone else-- I should have finished reading all four pages of postings as well as the Westside FAQs before I posted my question. After reading them all, I have decided that you (the collective you) have answered all my questions. Except for one. I have a Great Expectations that I got...

Chris- I read (and appreciated) your response to ademink about the cooking anecdote for nematodes. Nevertheless, I'm not really sure about the proper procedure of the dish/water/leaf/sunlight (?) test to discover nematodes. I suppose I'm going to have to do some reading on the subject because I don'...

The Hosta Handbook by Ziler
The Hosta Handbook by Mark Ziler--Tell me something about it. Does it list most of the "well-known" hostas through the printing date? Does it provide growing conditions (some sun, no sun, etc.) Does it have pictures? Color pictures? How-to(s) on hybridizing? I know that it is out of print but I also...

Joe's Super Pictures
Joe- I'm sure that I will be studying all four of them over and over tonight until I make a decision. The reason it is such a BIG decision to me is that I don't buy one hosta of 20-40 hostas each year. Instead I buy 10 of 4 or 5 hostas each year so that I can have a mature plant immediately. I find ...

Need Help with New Shade Bed
I used to have assorted hostas--Sum and Substance, Elegans, Frances Williams, Big Mammoth, Gold Standard, Great Expectations, Krossa Regal, Abiqua Drinking Gourd, etc.--planted around tree trunks in continuing shade beds throughout the yard. Finally I realized that each year they were smaller as the...

To Ademink-Your blue umbrellas is gorgeous, blue or not. To Marlys, Dave, George, and all-I finally found Millennium online at Sebright Gardens in Oregon as well as Blue Umbrellas and Sun Power at at NH Hostas. I may wait to get Mississippi Delta next year. I'm still not sure about the differences b...

Gold Look-a-like Choice
Continuing the look-a-like strand, I am also trying to find a new gold hosta. I have gold standard and a small (relatively speaking) Sum and Substance. I also had a large one that recently became infected with Hosta Virus X after four years of sitting alone in a barrel. At any rate, which would be t...

Chris and Dave-Thank you for your prompt input. I'm trying to decide whether I want to order Brother Stephan and Mississippi Delta from Olga (the hosta lady). Millennium was actually my preferred choice but finding it has become, in itself, a chore. Dave-I checked out your hosta list, rather extensi...

Help--Container Roses
I have very large "The Fairy" that was beautiful until I put it in a 21" fiberglass whiskey barrel three days ago. Now, half of the leaves are yellowing. It is planted in a mix of peat moss, perlite, a "smidgen" of potting soil, and mostly finely ground bark mulch. What does it need? Just Miracle Gr...

Help please--which of these hostas look and perform better: Brother Stefan, Paradigm, Captain Kirk, or Dick Ward? I'm assuming that they are all rather similar. Also, Blue Umbrellas, Mississippi Delta, or Millennium? Which one is more upright? I can't even find anyone online who sells Millennium act...
