Re: John is back again!
Hi Owen, I was just admiring your Iris, especially that unusual gold-centered burgundy one, awesome. I've just started collecting some of the tall bearded iris (and siberians) thanks to a generous friend at work. I am trying to get away from too heavy an emphasis on daylilies and hostas, although th...

Re: Mixing Daylilies and Daffodils
Hi Ed, if there is sufficient sun for the daylilies to flower, shouldn't it be okay for the lilies as well?
Jerry, I am curious about the black walnut trees, having heard they secrete something that makes growing anything near then quite difficult. This is not a problem?

Re: Pest identification and treatment help, please!
Thanks, Chris. I checked the link, and see there are 8 or 9,000 species, so making an i.d. is hard. I note that these things are causing distorted growth on the ends of the shoots.

Re: Mixing Daylilies and Daffodils
Hi Jerry, I mix the two, and find it is a perfect combination. The daffodil foliage does last a bit longer than might be ideal, but the daylily foliage soon covers it. One nursery used to offer this mix, with the addition of Oriental lilies for yet another season of bloom. I have little experience w...

John is back again!
Just want to say hello to all my Hallson Gardens friends. Sometimes life gets in the way of our gardening fun, but enough of that! Looking forward to reading the postings and seeing photos of your plants and gardens. I am still hybridizing Hemerocallis, the daylily, and getting closer to 'green.' Th...

Pest identification and treatment help, please!
I will attach some photographs of an insect pest which is attacking my Hibiscus syriacus, the Rose-of-Sharon.
I would appreciate help identifying this pest, as well as ideas for how best to treat against it.
Thank you!
John

Re: Are daylilies of unknown parentage taboo?
Technically, you can't be sure if FT was the pod or the pollen parent, so you'd have to register it as unknown x unknown (since you couldn't place the name of FT properly.] You could of course provide the information that your plant is most likely out of FT elsewhere.

Re: Help! Weirdness in Hosta Garden!!!
Didn't take any more photos, but today each one of those white bulbous things has turned into another... red-orange thing. Really gross looking. Love the exorcism story, Viktoria. I'd need a priest on stand-by. Maybe I should find my copy of the Ritual. It is certainly odd how Nature repeats certain...

Re: Help! Weirdness in Hosta Garden!!!
Thank you both for the fast replies! You are right! Here is a good link to the 'stinkhorn', Mutinus elegans,or possibly, M. caninus. thy, that common name of Daddy-Go-Wash is truly repulsive, blecch. I wonder if these will disappear as fast as they came? Rain is forecast here for days to come. That ...

Help! Weirdness in Hosta Garden!!!
Here is a photo and closeup of something shocking that appeared overnight (?) in my Hosta Garden, near the Bletilla hardy orchids. I am guessing it is a fungus? The ball-like things are about 1" wide, the red-orange tongue thing is about 6" long. The whole plant is growing quite close to the ground....

Re: Second year seedling
I'd suggest waiting until the roots begin to fill the container, then plant in the soil in the better location. Perhaps not too much sun? so the white stays fresh?

One of the 'anxious traders' received his package today--- the postman even came back to deliver it after the regular rounds! THANK YOU, to jennaj, for a very special box of hostas! Re: Mandevilla cuttings root in water?
Pandora, the idea is to just overwinter it, not keep it growing, so either one would be fine, wherever you can better spare the room. I'll be experimenting with my gorgeous new red one myself.

Re: Mandevilla cuttings root in water?
The best idea would be to leave it in its container, and cut it back to about 12" tall. Water only enough to keep it from completely drying out.
