if you had to choose 5 favorites...

Post by hmacgarden »

Hi all,
If you had to choose only 5 of your favorites, that stand out in the garden, don't get slug holes, look good all season, and are still looking great now.....
mine are St. Paul, June, Sagae, Grand Marquee, Revolution

Bienvenue Heather,

My list of 5 from amongst the meager list of 43 varieties I have is:

June
Blue Mouse Ears
Bright Lights
Minute Man
Fragrant Blue

This late in the season however all of these are starting to show the first signs of senescense. For me, Revolution is almost half done, so local climate/temperature conditions will come into play.

A lot of plants have already started to go down for the season, but I've taken notice of a few recently that were still looking good:

Rascal has looked great all season and still looks nice
Ann Kulpa looks really good now, and considering it is a white centered plant that is all the more amazing for September
Nancy Gill is still looking great in the garden, even though all the plants around it have a ton of slug damage
Deep Blue Sea is really looking nice too
Earth Angel still looks pristine :)

How can you tell the difference between a hosta going dormant and one that has died on you? My Spilt Milk completely vanished from sight. A friend gave me another and it too is browning and loosing it's leaves. Is this normal for SM this time of year? It's my first year growing Spilt Milk.

My 'Spilt Milk' was first to turn brown, a few weeks ago, and it is pretty much dormant now. [Other than 'Invincible', which looks BAD every year after a promising start in spring.]

That's great news John! Maybe I now own two Spilt Milks! I guess I have to wait now till spring to find out. Good thing I have seeds to play with or winter would drive me nuts.

Unchained Melody
Peter Ruh
High Noon
Leading Lady
Darwin's Standard

Like Linda, this question prompted me to take a walk around the gardens . . . Paradigm, as I've posted before, just has looked great all summer, and still does. Abba Dabba Do is probably the second-best standout in my garden, and it still looks good. Then probably, Paul's Glory, On Stage, and Krossa Regal . . .

WOW! Thanks all...I just added 15 new ones to my "look them up" list....and, maybe, to my shopping list.

I must be on the right track...

Because each list included 1-3 of my 10 favorites.

Although it is an oldie I have to add:

plantiginea

A couple others:

August Moon
s. Elegans
Abiqua Drinking Gourd ( I have a mature 10 year old that stops traffic, a little like ketchup, worth the wait.)

And although definitely not a fav of most and only because mine seems to perform VERY well, although definitely NOT the case for most of you...

Wolverine is #1 - I planted this in a full sun walkway a couple years ago - behind a small shrub - and it still looks as good as when it first leafed out!

Lakeside Cha Cha also in more sun than most of my hosta and it still looks great.
Delta Dawn - just added to the garden this year and it's still leaving out!
Lakeside Shoremaster - perfect condition and a fast grower.
Iron Gate Delight a large freebee that was never on my radar - what a beauty (an it gets a lot of comments from visitors too)!
