Yikes! Hosta 'Color Glory' is a favorite in my gardens. In fact, it is near the top of the favorite list. I will say it took awhile for it to mature & show its true colors.

And 'Fire & Ice' is a perfect little hosta - very distinctive / beautiful! Scooter is a great little plant. My neighbor gave it to me a few years ago. Super Nova is a beautiful hosta. And Invincible is wonderful too in my gardens.

However, 'Paul's Glory' I got rid of too And was glad it was gone!!! I have ever only seen one beautiful PG on a hosta tour. And to think it was Hosta of the Year - 1999.

Some times I think it is the growing conditons, tree root competetion, poor / dry soil, too much sun, not enough sun, disease, etc. that "make or break" plants in our gardens. Just want folks to know 'Color Glory' is not always a dud!

But yes, if the plant isn't lookin' good, get rid of it & make room for something better. Now, that 'Pizzazz' should go in my gardens. It was really pretty until it matured. Looked terrible last year!!! I didn't get it dug out tho. Giving it one last chance. Hey, that might make a good name for a new hosta, "One Last Chance"

Last year I did dig out my huge Zippity Do Dah & throw it on the compost pile. It was beautiful until later in the growing season; it just fell apart / went to pieces / got all ratty! My neighbor, David came along and took it home. It is beautiful in his garden this spring. We'll see what summer heat brings.

Marlys I'm glad Color Glory looks great in your garden! I guess we just have different growing conditions. I had Fire and Ice too, but it was a no show this year, not a sign anywhere (obviously it wasn't happy either). I have 300 hostas that are doing well, so I guess its not all bad. Maybe they just didn't like the clay soil?

I hope folks reading this thread realize that for my gardens I'm missing something that this hosta needed to thrive. It doesn't mean that it won't look great in yours.

I've had Color Glory for 11 years. It sat for a couple of years, then looked really good for a while. Then it started betting the spring dessication, and looked horrid. I moved it out to the back row, where I could go look at it in the years it did look good, and just ignore it when it didn't. Two years ago it came up with half of it all blue. I had to dig the whole plant to sort out the solid part, and the main plant went into a decline. This year there are 3 or 4 ugly little leaves. I haven't thrown it out, but don't really expect that it will recover.
Oh, and I have a beautiful Paul's Glory........

Chaulk up 'Elvis Lives' as a dud for me. I'm on my third try
but it should have been called 'Elvis Dies'. Perhaps I'm overdosing it (LOL... I'm in trouble know with all you Elvis fans) with plant food.

I also have a beatuful Pauls Glory, highly recommend that one. One that kills me is T-Rex it just sits there doesn't grow leaves don't get very big. I guess I'll try to move it and see what it does but right now it's plain green and doesn't do anything.

Glenn, that is too funny! I have an Elvis Lives that has had one too many peanut butter and banana sandwiches, I think. It's way bigger than I expected it to get. This pic is from last year...it's even larger this year.

Have a 4' plus Paul's Glory - one of six I put along the street to get neighborhood attention - a real beauty!

And two Elvis Lives, both lovely... one grows against the trunk of a spruce tree in total dry shade and very poor soil, surviving only on the watering I do when I happen to get around to it and getting a little fertilizer every year or five...

I think much of it is conditions and climate... but over the years I've become convinced that it is also a matter of which batch of tc you happened to get your plant from. Tattoo is a good example. My first set of tc grew just great... the ones from the next year were very touchy and never showed the vigor of the previous ones.

The differences between plants I've obtained from different years can be just as dramatic as the differences between growing in different regions of the country. Makes it tricky in giving a cultivar the thumbs up or thumbs down...

That's one nice looking 'Elvis Lives' . Mine only amounted to four dried up roots that looked more like Joan River's face.

I apologize I was confused (no comments from you, please, Reldon). I thought we were talking about hosta 'Old Glory'. 'Color Glory' is a entirely different ball game It is maybe the same plant as 'Borwick Beauty' which is not a beauty in the common shade garden.

I was sleeping last night when it came to me, that I thought I had confused this topic.

Marlys, no apologies needed!!! I'd heard that Old Glory was a wonderful hosta and had put that on my list. When I bought Color Glory I was thinking Old Glory, so being confused about this plant happened to me too. At some point I'll get Old Glory and then hopefully Color Glory will become a memory. (Glory! What a tongue twister of a post ).
