My mom had a plant similar to this when I was growing up. She got hers from one of her club friends I think & it was called Sacred Lily of India. Beautiful foliage, but the smell of rotting flesh up close & personal was enough to make me never want one of my own.

Looks very cool, but glad the smell doesn't travel over the internet...I bet it was covered in flies doing their thing. Thanks for the pic.

Here in Canada we call that a "voodoo" Lily. And yes they stink like hell !!! Great flower however....one no normal florist will ever use in an arrangement. They smell like they do to attract flies (instead of bees) that will pollinate them.

I can only imagine what your hosta were saying!
There are several similar plants out there. Although I find them fascinating I'm just glad I don't have them in my garden!
I have to deal with The Tree of Heaven that is seeded into this new garden ... I think was originally called "The Tree That STINKS to High Heaven!"
I've been digging it out since we moved here in March
That's enough for one garden!

That's definitely cool. How long do the "flowers" last? Will it produce more than one?

The last one flowered for about 5 days before showing signs of fatigue. After that, they fade pretty quickly. They are kind of like a big, stinky jack-in-the-pulpit. Just one flower for the season.

I have seen a bloom on one once, and it was so intruiging, but lordy, it was odorous.
Helen, When I was growing up, My neighbor had a "tree of heaven" and my mom and I would sneak over and pour boiling water with a pound of salt around the tree to kill it. It took many pounds to eventually kill it but it was such a disgusting tree we had to banish it. Of course, we would only do this when my neighbor traveled........he was gone weeks at a time investigating airline crashes.
Yep, you guessed it, he figured out what killed his precious tree. I can still see the look on my moms face when she was confronted by him ..........with him licking his fingers and saying it tasted like salt to him.
