Phyllis, I was thinking of you today when contemplating how to go about digging up a huge hostas. Then your words came to me, "I've learned that chopping a large hosta into pieces is much easier than wrestling the huge, heavy monster all in one chunk." Or something close to that. So thanx! Phyllis for making my work so much easier today.
This particular hosta was sold to me and a couple friends as H 'Spring Fling'. We tried to tell the greenhouse owner that it wasn't SF. He was insistant that it just didn't look like itself yet like some hosta and it would eventually. Well, the next spring he replaced our plants with the real SF after Shady Oaks replaced them to him.
SF is an awesome plant and sentimental to me as my girl friends and I used to run away during early spring on long road trips. We called them our Spring Fling.
This all green plant is tall about 30 inches or more and huge with very large round, cupped down leaves with ruffle pie crust edges. I don't know what it is but it's beautiful too. Now to find new homes for the chunks somewhere besides Marlys' Garden.
Thanx! Phyllis,
MM

Hmmmm....I don't remember seeing that one or hearing that story! You should probably save a piece of that big thing for your favorite party pooper.
Sounds intriguing! And I'm glad you remember the wise words from Phyllis and did not try to dig the whole thing up all in one piece.

Today, even with spring allergies running rampant and sinus infection brewing I finally dug out my old stanby H 'Green Piecrust' again using Phyllis' slicing and dicing method. What a challenge. It's now in 4 big pots waiting for a new home along with the giant unknown which I really thing might be Niagra Falls but really it could be anything. The spring garden chores are never ending. H 'Grand Canyon' is the next to find itself in a pot-home. It really just never had a decent growing spot here. I've been going to dig it up for like oh, 3 or 4 years now.
