Happy New Year!

Post by Chris_W »

Wow, it is hard for me to believe it is now 2015! This will be the 20th year since Brian and I started on this journey and I never would have imagined where this would take us. Thank you all for helping us out and joining us along the way :)

2014 was a crazy one in the hosta world with the passing of Shady Oaks Nursery and Q & Z Nursery in the same season, and those of us in the business are still left wondering who will take their place. I suspect that a lot of nurseries will fall back to buying Dutch grown plants, which will mean an increase of nematodes and virus on the market I'm afraid. But it will also leave an opportunity for an entrepreneur to come along and take over the niche market of hosta tissue culture plants. Heck, maybe Mark Zilis will pop back up and start putting hostas out again leaving us all scratching our heads. Don't start thinking that I'll be doing any of my own tissue culture work because we certainly don't have that kind of funding available nor the desire to take on something of that magnitude. :P

On a personal note, 2014 was a year that I will remember for a different reason. For several years I've been plagued with pain that I and even some doctors thought was due to kidney stones, which I have had for years, while other doctors insisted I must be a drug seeker, but by the end of the summer, after the pain got to the point of barely allowing me to be able to function, I finally found out what was really going on and got some help. I was having trouble digging and could barely climb the stairs to go to bed at night and after numerous phone calls I finally found a doctor who took me serious and helped me to find out that the primary pain I've been having is due to a herniated thoracic disc. I also have other protruding lumbar discs, arthritis in my spine, and two large hemangiomas in my lumbar as well. Unfortunately treatment in August set me back even worse so I went to the University of Michigan for a second opinion where I learned that arthritis in my SI joint was the main cause of my low back pain and leg pain, while the rest of the issues in my lower back are not actually causing any problems. The doctor told me that most people who work for a living will have herniated discs in their lumbar, and even though it looked like a train wreck the main issues I was having were in my hip. The thoracic herniated disc is still causing me some problems but I'm taking Gabapentin which is helping and I go for a spinal injection in a couple weeks.

So where does that leave me now? After 6 weeks of physical therapy which I just finished before the holidays I'm feeling better than I have in almost 10 years. I'm working just fine, walking just fine, can run up a flight of stairs as if it was nothing (during the summer I was sleeping downstairs and thought I would have to permanently move my bed to the first floor), and I'm finally finishing up several big projects that we had been planning for years. 2014 was the summer that I had to just sort of coast through, but 2015 is really looking bright for me now and you will be hearing from me a lot more this season. I promise!

On the hosta side, 2014 ended up being a rebuilding year for us so we have an excellent supply here for the next few seasons. We had been operating near capacity for years and in 2013 we went beyond that a little so the hosta inventory had dropped some. We opened up more production space last year and have a really nice crop coming up for the future. I'm working on the online catalog for 2015 right now, in between working on those big projects I mentioned, and it should have some nice new additions, including the newest introduction of Hosta 'Summer Rainbow', with even more plants coming to our inventory in 2016. Watch for the finished 2015 catalog in the next few weeks.

We also have some other very exciting future news to share regarding three more of our introductions, but I'll save that for another time. ;)

Thanks for taking the time to read up on my year, and feel free to share your ups and downs of the last year too. I'd also love to hear what will be exciting for you in the upcoming hosta summer :)

Happy new year!

Happy New Years to you too Chris and Brian!! Congrats on finding the solution to your health problems. Lucky you!! It is great you found a doctor that listened instead of pushing the pills. I feel your pain and understand what you have been going through. I too got the chance to find a new doc after years of dealing with the same and seeing some of the best local docs whom state one will just have to live with the issues. She was surprised at the height change in just one year so off to bone density tests and she also found some serious issues with my skin. All is well now and with a new doc we hope to keep the issues at bay. Wear your hats and use your sunscreen every 90 minutes!!

Chris have you looked into other nurseries that do tissue culture for the hosta world? Try Terra Nova Nursery, talk to Dan there as I know they are always looking for plant material to work with, you will have to sign papers. Just a thought.

This year we tore down the old greenhouse due to we were going to put the house on the market. Our neighbors were getting just unbelievable and we decided it was time to leave the mess we have put up with for 8 years. Long story short, we were told we couldn't sell our house with what was around us and get the money it was worth. So we decided more fencing was the best way to deal with it. Also a new greenhouse was in the works if we were to stay. Life here got even better when the drug house went up for sale in Dec. and the other house, well let's say the folks are not around? The owner has been seen with a rank in their hands but the place is still a pig's sty. Cameras on one's home do work and you wouldn't believe what some folks do when folks are away.

Hope everyone enjoys the up coming new year and let the growing season begin!!

Chris, I understand that search for the right combination of things to ease the pain. I'm so glad you finally found some relief!!! It's amazing how much better you feel when you get a pain issue resolved.
It's been a challenging year in my life too. I lost many seedlings over the winter of 2013/14, probably about 80% of the last 5 years work. We've had a major change in our lives since John retired from milking, and spend our winters in the Rio Grande Valley. I fully intended to bring hosta seeds with me to Texas this year, but a diagnosis of cancer for one of my brothers this fall, with many resulting trips with him to the hospital in Iowa City getting definition and care lined up for him. That, and a few other issues that needed my attention, led to me being exhausted by the time Christmas got here, and then my wonderful grandchildren shared a nasty respiratory virus with me right before Christmas. We packed up and left for Texas two days after Christmas, which was a big mistake, because I have still not recovered, though feeling somewhat better today. Of course with all that going on I forgot to pack the hosta seeds.
My garden will be an alternate Sunday tour garden for the Midwest Regional Convention in Dubuque, Iowa, hosted by my hosta club. So, it will be all hands on deck trying to get the garden ready for that next spring. One of the highlights of my garden year was having a visit from Dr Dave, and his lovely Elizabeth, and Joan and Herb Altman as they were on the way to the national convention in Cedar Rapids. The time went by way too quickly!
I sure hope to have more time to spend with hosta friends this year. The size of my garden, and the rapidity with which I seem to be growing older, have conspired to keep me busy at home most of the time, but it's a good place to be. My garden is filled with plants that remind me of all the hosta friendships I've gained over the years, many of them right here on these pages.
Happy New Year!!

So glad you are feeling better Chris! It is horrible when you can't get anyone to listen to you. Looking forward to seeing these new projects you are working on. Happy New Year and all the best to you and Brian.
