Hello Chris,
You mention you would like to use H. 'Grand Slam' in hybridizing.
My advice: DO IT.
GS is thought to be a select form of H. longipes var. latifolia, a species with great breeding potential.
I've used GS as a pod parent over the past years, and the results are simply amazing.
All my seedlings are OP, and there are blue, green and yellow ones, all variations from shiny to thick powdery finish, flat margins to extremely ruffled, small to medium sized, all kinds of substance, from rather thin to very leathery. I almost forgot the petioles: from green to completely red or purple, often running pretty far into the leaf blade.
Last year one of those seedlings got the "Best 2009 new introduction" from the Dutch Hosta Society (Hosta Mill, there are pictures on my website and in the Hosta Library).
I'm planning on using it to try and get minis and larger offspring over the next years.
Greeting,
Rob
