Lost the tag on this one

Post by MollyD »

This is a very small (mini?) plant. The whole clump fits in the palm of my hand. I got it in 2005 and meant to label it but the wind blew the store tag away before I got the chance to. Having an atrocious memory I can't remember it's name.
I noticed recently that it's sending out a runner about 6" away with new plants attached! You can see it at the bottom front of the mug shot. Also blooms are lavender held about 10" above the ground.

Does it look familiar to anyone?

Off the subject, or rather, back on the subject... It is difficult to tell size from the photo, but sometimes Blue Cadets can come out really small if they have been tramatized in some way. The leaves and color look like Blue Cadet to me...it can look so different in different scenarios.

I'm horrible at ID'ing unknowns, but could it be Popo? Looks a lot like mine currently.

Then again, it could be the GS that's been multiplying in your gardens!

Nope, not Blue Cadet. This was a mini I bought. It is and always has been tiny. The entire clump fits in the palm of my hand.
I'm not familiar with Popo. Is it a mini?
And it's not a GS!

The leaves do resemble Popo, but I've never seen Popo send out runners. It forms a nice clump.

It always has that nice clean look to it too. Someone said size was hard to judge. I would compare it to Blue Mouse Ears in size.
I'm fond of the little bugger and glad I finally found a way to grow it where it won't get stepped on. I have to get a photo of it in bloom. The flowers hang over it rather jauntily!

Just thought I'd throw in a picture of my Popo for comparision.

Mine is a bit bigger than palm size...maybe 2 hand fulls

Popo certainly has a very strong resemblance to mine! Does Popo put out runners like mine is doing? Blooms look similar too btw.

I just went to the Hosta Library to look Popo up and many of the photos look a lot like my mini but what's with the tall heart shape leaf one?? Two of them had heart shaped leaves. Is this something that Popo does as it gets older? Hope not! I like it the way it is now!!!

I've never seen Popo put out runners. Mine is smallish right now - it heaved and I lost part of it to freeze, but it usually forms a perfect little mini mound.

Whatever you have - it's cute!

Thanks Alexa! It's cuteness was what caught my eye when I bought it. I almost walked past it but then I took a closer look and it was love at second glance  No way was I going home without that cutie!

Molly, my first thought was Tot Tot for your NOID. It's a Blue CadetXvenusta hybrid. There's a good pic of the flowers from Viktoria on the HL.
It could be venusta, which does sort of throw off those shoots, but the leaves look a little too thick. Venusta doesn't quite have that much substance.

Thanks Linda but I don't think so. It looks very different from my little one. Plus if those markers are anything to judge by it's about twice the size of my plant (not referring here to growth but size at maturity). My plant was labelled a mini, not a small hosta so it will not get that big. I remember that because before that moment I had never heard of mini hostas! Took me by surprise that such a thing even existed.

Thanks for trying.

Have you looked at Rock Princess?

My Rock Princess is stoloniferous(sp?? send out runners) is a little more green than Popo (my Popo is pretty glaucous) and has great substance.

I will try to get a photo later. It is 90+ out there right now and I am about melting!

That one looks a lot like mine! Maybe Rock Princess is the one! Is there a way for me to verify that it is or isn't that one?

Molly, why don't you contact the nursery where you bought it in 2005? They might know.
