Making your own planters for hostas

Post by Muddy fingernails »

I saw Martha Steward mix up cement, sphagnum moss and perlite with water and make a planter. That idea just intrigues me. I want to make my own planters as well, especially since i saw the website of a German hosta lover who has many of her plants in old stone pots.
I have lots of miniature hostas that would do well in containers.
have you ever made your own planter?

Martha's method works well and if you add poly fibre to the mix it is much much stronger and cracks less.

:???: Seems there was thread on the forums here, about making your own and someone shared what he used and others had tried it. But to be honest, I've never done it.

Maybe try to do a search on the forums for what they used and the results?

I’m going a different way...log pots. I haven’t made any yet...but soon. Ran out of rocks to edge beds, so started using lengths of big old logs, set vertically. Looks real nice here in the forest! The log sections are wide enough to use for seating and we can make them any length to suit each situation best. Oh, and they are free...except for gas for the chainsaw! And with the forest out back, we have an endless supply.

To make the matching log pots will use a big drill to hollow out some of the vertical log sections and set pots inside. Will make some quite tall, to better show off the white undersides of some of my favorites and to showcase the arching habit of some. And you never know...if I get my hands on some timber chisels I might just have to do some carving on some (dragon/gargoyle). I have an idea for some Japanese Lantern sort of things carved out of solid big logs...
