Favorite New/Almost new plant

I'm sure many people have had a chance to look at the many 2008 catalogs that have been released. So, what are your favorite new hostas?

Well, not sure yet for those that are new in 2008.

For those I purchased last year, "new" or otherwise, I especially liked 'Red Cadet', 'Mauai Buttercups', 'Foxfire Irish Moon', 'Orange Marmalade', 'Pineapple Upside Down Cake', 'Lakeside San Kao' and 'Fire Island'. I bought several other "new" releases that aren't yet showing their beauty, but they are young, so hopefully will begin to show more in the next year or two.

Some of my favorite "new" plants are ones that I wouldn't have bought from seeing it in the catalogs but then loved it in person. Two like that for this year are Lullabye and Wily Willy. I plan on having Jaz next year and that was another that I liked after I saw it.

Like most of us I'm amazed by the pictures of Purple Haze and hope to get my hands on that one some day! And that new plant from Kent, The Razor's Edge, that is in the auction sure looks nice and I look forward to the day when I can see it in the garden and growing areas here.

Sometimes I get those really new plants that looked amazing in the catalogs only to be a bit disappointed once they hit the garden. That's part of the reason why I tend to wait a couple years to get those really new and untested plants, just to kind of see if the buzz lasts. And if I really like something I will try to make it a permanent addition to our selection. Unfortunately I would run out of room if I grew everything I wanted, so I really try to pick and choose, and listen to what people are lusting after here on the forum

Like Chris... I'm quite impressed with Purple Haze. I think it will end up being one of those spring hostas as most coloring like that doesn't hold up well in the heat of summer.

Cold Heart from Alttara is another that I like it has everything I love in a hosta.

Although not that new Candy Dish is one I just can't get enough of. Like stated by Bob Solberg it just might be the perfect hosta!

My personal favorite "newer" must have Hostas are
Atlantis
American Icon
Skylight
If you can afford it, Stitch in Time is one I just wanted to buy and see what it does here.

- Purple Haze
- Jaws
- Sahara Nights
- June Frost
- the 3 Mouse Ears sports

One that I have ordered that I am pretty excited to see is Clovelly. Last year I bought Stich in Time and Mango Tango... I'm looking forward to seeing those two over the next few years.

Others I would really like to get:
The Razor's Edge
Purple Haze
Frosted Mouse Ears

Although I only collect solid colored plants (and the odd streaked one), since I saw a mature specimen at Marco Fransen's nursery, I consider H. 'Paradise Island' the most spectacular new introduction I've seen recently.
But for my own collection H. 'Clovelly' is the most awaited newcomer. Hope it looks as good in reality as it does in pictures

The picture of Purple Haze is more the exception than the rule from everything I heard in the last couple of years....In addition if you do get the purple color it is short lived.

I am not trying to rain on the parade just telling what I have heard and seen.

I don't think you will be dissapointed with Clovelly. It might take a year or two (these are TC's) but just wait for those ruffles
