ID please

I bought this hosta at a farm store the other day and it was the only one like it. The others all looked like Undulata but all were marked F Auroramarginata. No way!!!!!! No wonder people get mixed up on hostas. I have never seen one this dark of green except Devon Gr on HL. What is this? BEV

I think I have 2 or 3 Francee's and the leaves are not that dark. BEV

If it's more of a forest green, but that lighter green leaf starting to grow makes me wonder if it isn't, yet I'm just going to put out a wild guess here and say a young (inmature) Minuteman, since it does sort of reminds me of mine a few years back when it was a baby (except the light green leaf). Margins get wider as it matures and the leaves start to have a cup shape.

The leaves are thicker than most hostas. I thought that Minite Man had smaller leaves like Patriot. BEV

Bev if you mean more substance mine Francee's has more them my Minuteman. The leaf size is much larger on my Minuteman then on my Patriot and they are about the same years old. Up to last month they lived right next to each other and crowding each other out so I moved Patroit.

Could you call the hosta farm and ask what it might be instead? If it's the one close to me I do have the phone #.

Hi Bev,

I was also thinking Francee. It should be a very dark green and thick leaf hosta, though it could vary a little depending on growing conditions. Another possibility could be an old one called Crowned Imperial. It think it might be a little darker than Francee.

another possibility is, given the Fortunei AUREOmarginata labeling... would be Fortunei ALBOmarginata... not as common as aureo "Gold Crown" but still lots of albo "Silver Crown" around... and FAlbo often has thinnish, irregular margins, unlike Aureo which usually has a pretty strong margin...

That's true. There were a lot of Fortunei ALBOmarginata at Meijer's last year. I was really surprised because I hadn't seen that one for sale in quite a while, even at the box stores. It wouldn't be a stretch for someone to swap Fortunei Aureomarginata tags for a Fortunei Albomarginata.

I thought 'Francee' as soon as I saw the pic, also. My 'Francee' is very dark also.

I'd say fortunei Aureomarginata if the margins are gold; Francee if they are white.

Looks like Francee to me also, mine has very dark leaves, they change very little in color through out the year.

I see a scape in the pic. It's not an immature form of Minuteman . For it to flower, your margins would be wider. It has to be Francee.

If your scape is barren, it's most likely a fortunei, and most of the Hostas mentioned here are fortunei family plants.

That was my first thought when I saw the picture.

Hey, it's happened to most of us. I bought a ventricosa from Hy Vee in Muscatine. Have had it 3 years. Just this year I noticed how tall the scapes were on it. DUH---it's Krossa Regal.
I just stood there feeling dumb, as a huge KR I have had for years behind me was flowering at the exact same time.
