Time for slugs

Post by thy »

Or rather it is time to bring the first slug peelets out. If you can kill them very early in the spring you will have a way better hosta summer :D

You are so right, Thy.
About 2-3 years ago, my collection was infested with brown garden snails.
It was a war, them against the hostas, and they almost won.
In the course of 3 years I must have killed about 30.000 of them.

This year winter lasted very long, so when the remaining snails came out of their winter shelter, there was hardly any food.
I sprinkled slug pellets 3 times so far and did a late night checkup a couple of times.
I was able to catch about 50 of them the first time (on a regular night the years before this would be 300+).
The last time I checked there were 4 (four) of them. :D
So far, there are hardly any holes in any of the hostas.
What I did find were a lot snails that had eaten the pellets and were killed.

I guess I won't forget this crisis for a long time; and if I should ever let down my guard, the hundreds of empty shell all over the garden will keep me on my toes.

This is a great tip. I just applied to my seedlings on Saturday, but need to apply to the rest of the gardens yet. Thanks for the nudge!
