Need plant suggestions please!

Hey all!

I've been asked to help redesign the planting beds around our church. We've decided that plants with a church/religious theme name would be fun to have so I am looking for any suggestions that are not expensive that you could suggest for sun and shade areas.

They must be hardy in z6/7, but beyond that I pretty much have free rein.

Inexpensive and readily available are really the most important points.

So far I have thought of:

Blue Angel - hosta
Cathedral Windows - Heuchera
Praying Hands - hosta
Wedding Bells - Campanula
Snow Angel - Heuchera
Regal Splendor - hosta
Immortality - Iris
Heavenly Habit - Jacob's Ladder
Majeste - Pulmonaria
Ruby Mantle - Sedum
Goodness Grows - Veronica

I would love some daylily suggestions or any others that might fit the theme!

BTW - if you know of any drawbacks to the ones I mentioned above - please let me know! I don't want to plant something that will probably fail or will rampants overgrow everything in sight!

What a wonderful project to be involved in!

I can't help much with advice about the plants themselves or their availabilty, but I can offer some more suggestions for you to consider with hostas. Here's some that came to mind:

any of the Christmas ones (Christmas Tree, Christmas Candy, Christmas Gold, etc)
Stained Glass
Peace
Hope
any Paradise one (Paradise Power, Paradise Glory,etc)
Northern Halo
Heart and Soul
Glory
Guardian Angel
Joy Bells
Earth Angel
Golden Prayers
Color Glory
Eternity
Bridegroom

I'm sure others will come up with more suggestions, especially for other perennials.

Clothed in Glory daylily, Stairway to Heaven iris. That's all that comes to mind at this moment. Neat project!

See Daylilies hybridized by Tim & Linda Bell. Many of theirs have names with religious overtones. Not all are super expensive.

I believe Grace names a lot of his/hers? with these names also.

I just saw the picture of arisaema triphyllum from hostadad (shade and woodland forum) and it made me think that in french, In Québec, the commun name from this plant is little preacher. Dicentra spectabilis has also a commun religious name it's Marie'heart.

Hi Alexa!

I don't know if it's the kind of name plant you want to know since it's in french but I thougt of other plants.

(Latin name, name in french, personal translation!)
Petunia, St-Joseph, St-Joseph
Cimicifuga racemosa, cierge d'argent, sylver candle
Polemonium caeruleum, échelle de Jacob, Jacob ladder
Solanum jasminoïde, étoile de Bethléem, Bethleem's star

For Sharon, little preacher is "petit prêcheur" in french and dicentra is "coeur de Marie".

I'm pretty sure that the english commun name for some plants aren't the same meaning in french!

Check this website for Biblical Herbs. One could do plant markers with some of the bible verses. Could be an interesting Sunday School or Adult Study to take ones' bible into the garden, look up the verse and visually see the plant. There is a Q&A link.
