Nice starter! But ya know I would start on something bigger as the plant bug hits you will need a few more! Yea, I remember those days and here is wishing you the best of luck!

Nice setup! Maybe paint the interior white to reflect more light back onto the plants? And if you are starting seeds, they will need to be very close to the lights, so maybe collect some mini-crates or something to boost them up. Great job! Enjoy it!

I see one major problem with it - it is NOT BIG ENOUGH! Oh no, not near big enough. You will be building more and bigger and more and bigger. I sure helps the winter time go by in a pleasant manner.

I use 2x4's cut to the length of a flat to elevate the teetiny babies closer to the lights. Even on my long chains, they will need an additional boost in the beginning plus it helps cut down on the number of times I have to change my light levels. I have a friend who saves old magazines to boost hers a little higher.

I see more building in your future.

How about some added chain to lower the lights and start some seedlings or cuttings on top, instant bottom heat!

Thanks for all the feedback. These were actually shelves that I had built. Didn't need them as shelves anymore so I enclosed with some luann and put some plastic that I can lift up in front to hold in some heat. I can lower the lights all the way down if I want. I do like the idea about doing some seedlings on top. I am starting only a small pot of seedlings for now just to try it out. I am trying some lemon basil. Do they need light to germinate? If not I can put them on top of the lights for some bottom heat. :D

I am already reading up on collecting seeds and making my own plants. I hope this won't turn into something that I lose interest in.

"lose interest in"? Not likely...! You may try different things and find your 'niche'... maybe growing out hosta seeds or perhaps rooting Brugmansia cuttings... one never knows where this hobby will take us.

I can't grow them, but some people have gorgeous African Violets under lights...

KD, you could also line the walls with aluminum foil for better light reflection. Keeping the lights within two inches or so of the new sprouts will keep them from getting leggy.
