My local box stores has clearance endless summer hydrangeas. Specifically 2 gallon pots for less than $4.
What are the survival changes if I pick up a couple, immediately plant tham and give them a good cover of mulch?
I hope this post belongs here...

My guess: they will be fine. I'd gamble on a couple.

Several suggestions for late planting:
Dig planting hole somewhat wider so roots have room to get settled quickly.
Cover with up to 3 inches of mulch now, shredded leaves would be good. After ground is frozen mulch deeply.
Provide water on a weekly basis or when soil is dry a few inches down. Do this until ground freezes. This is a must for helping roots to establish now.
Keep in mind when this shrub is touted as being frost hardy that is for a well establish plant, so gives yours some extra care. Happy planting
