Need Advice: Most Fragrant Climbers

Post by Wanda »

I need to know which roses are the most fragrant climbers that will thrive in Zone 5 in the middle of the lower peninsula of Michigan. Sometimes our winters more resemble Zone 4, sometimes Zone 6. Very protected microclimate - a pocket in mature woodlands. Sun from late morn to early eve - about 10:30 am to 6:30 pm. Hoping to find a couple that don’t need to be regularly drenched in chemicals to survive...I will not use any chemicals in my gardens. Would prefer an everbloomer or repeat bloomer.

Oh, and I pretty much hate orange and am not overly fond of yellow. If I had my preferance, dark purple or deep raspberry would be best, with the deep, rich wine-like fruity fragrance rather than a light floral scent.

Am I asking too much?

I don't know if 'Compassion' meets all your needs, but it might be worth your while to ask nurseries in your area whether they have it & if they do, what they think of it.

You might look at 'Russells Cottage Rose', a very hardy old rambler with good, heavy OGR fragrance & flower colors ranging from magenta to deeper purple & sometimes mottled with white  Once-blooming, but quite healthy without spraying, attractive in season & not fussy about soil conditions :)

A good raspberry colored climber

I recommend Jon Cabot.

It is one of the Explorer series. I only spray it about 4 time (once every 10 days with Bug Be Gone, starting about June 1). It grows about 7 feet tall here in central WI, I saw one almost 10' tall in Madison, WI.

It is fragrant. too.

Mine is three years old. I tried to post a picture, no luck, too big.

Thanks everyone! I have been gardening in shade so long all my rose knowledge is ancient (hehe). Had a couple monster white pines removed this fall (trunks over 9’ around) so will have a dab of sunshine in our forest and really want a couple climbing roses. Will look up the suggestions and see what I can find. Keep the suggestions coming!

My climbing Sombreuil is real fragrant. It has done real good here. The best out of the 6 climbers I have....So much for the highly rated Illusion, and Sympathie....I have 2 each of those and they haven't done much....Both Sympathies haven't even gotten taller than my waist....I don't know....This year they are getting that Messenger....The rose people seem to like it. I have Dublin Bay, and that one did good. It isn't fragrant though.

Good Luck Wanda!! :D
