Hummers everywhere this year!

Post by doublemom2 »

We've had more hummers in the past two weeks than we saw all of last year. They are going crazy for the hosta flowers, the fuchsias, and of course the feeder right outside my kitchen window. We have Annas and rufous hummers here, and the Annas are overwintering here too.

Love these guys!

For years we've had lots of hummers coming to the 4 feeders we put out......this year, there's a pair of orioles that seem to be thinking I have that nectar out for THEM!!
(I DID purchase an oriole feeder, but they seldom land there....a few hummers have tried!)

It's funny to see tiny hummers buzzing around trying to chase away the orioles....but, sadly, we've noticed a decline in our tiny friends.....p

I have seen several this year too. More than usual for me anyway.

We just had a staring contest this evening with another one. My DH and I were standing by the pond when a hummer started feeding on the dierama in bloom just feet away from us. After eating a delicious fast-food meal of dierama nectar, it perched on one of the stems and just sat there for 3-4 minutes staring at us. We held really still, but still kept talking. It just sat there about 5' away and watched us. Wow! They are such amazing creatures. I'm just loving that we have so many of them this year :)

Andi, we have only had 2 hummers down here so far. I have several feeders in the yard one, by the Ktchen window. I just love them.

Andi, I love my hummers, too....Don't know what kind they are, but I think they are the kind OED said.... I can usually see one always when I am outside....

petal*pusher if you have the orioles, put grape jelly out for them....I'l take a picture of my feeder DH made me and show you later....Or you can always scoop out an orange and put some in there too if you have one of those orange holders....I love the orioles

Thanks Andi for the picture!! :D

that you have so many hummers. We have the fewest this year we have ever had. I think we just have one pair of Ruby Throats and maybe a Juvenile..Feed them good for the Old Coot.

We get a lot of the ruby throated ones. But the cool story is that we have had the same one return for the past 5 or 6 years and he guards the feeder by sitting on my clematis cage just a few feet from me and just below the feeder. I call him the "old man" and he looks kind of scruffy and fat(from hogging all the nectar). He is really comfortable with me- I love when he scratches the back of his head with his foot as he perches on the wire.
