Whooping Cranes Migrating North

Post by phloxywis »

spring is here :D most of the whooping cranes wintering in florida or in the southeastern states have started or have already completed their spring migration. 10 whoopers have already migrated back to the neceedah wildlife refuge in wisconsin. 10 of last year's group have started their northward migration and are now in georgia. 1 of last years cohort remains in florida. one of the big questions is if the 5 birds that found themselves on the wrong side of lake michigan last year will return to michigan or get back to wisconsin this year. you may remember that 3 of them were able to somehow cross lake michigan and the other 2 spent the summer in michigan. you can read about the where-abouts of the other birds at www.operationmigation.org and click on "in the field".

cranes

it does seem like it was just a short time ago that they were heading south. probably because they didn't get to florida until december. i hope i get to see them this year in the wild. if you go to the neceedah refuge and are lucky, you can see ( with binoclulars) white spots a few miles away. but i want to see some that are closer than that. i'll keep my eyes open :o you never know when or where one or several may be.

The cranes make such a racket! They are so happy to see each other in the spring. I know there didn;t used to be so many, but now I have almost hit them with my car. They are smarter than the turkeys, though.

I heard on the news (WPR) today that a pair from this flock laid an egg & was observed over the past wkend sitting on the nest, but alas, a predator has eaten the egg. Probably a racoon the reporter said.

Maybe they will lay another one yet this spring.
