Help needed please................
I need to repot some containers for Japanese Maples. What do you use for soil? I know not to use the amended store bought type, but what do I use.
Your thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated!

Thanks for replying, George. One more question-what is potting compost? (do we have a translation?

)
Thank you

Hi,
It is a ready mixed compost you buy from garden centres it has all the right mix of trace elements, you can buy different mixes ie ericacious or for bulbs or for seeds.

Here in the southeast you want something that allows good drainage like triple ground pine bark, coarse sand, and some composted cow manure (for water retention and increased organic matter). A lot of my potted maples have large pebbles in the bottom, then a orchid mix (organic and coarse), then composted cow manure with the pine bark, topped off with some pea gravel. They seem to do well. Sometimes people unknowingly plant the roots too deep so they don't thrive. Just as long as you make sure that they still get "aeration" available to their roots, it usually goes fine.
Steer clear of deep narrow pots. The wider the better (wider than tall).
Don't be afraid to "tweek" whatever recipe you go with, as your area may have more/less rain or sun or temperatures.
Good luck!!
