water lily question

Post by Hesalure »

Hi all, new here.
I have some lilies in my pond, they are planted in aquatic soil(looks like kitty litter) and my fish spread the soil all over the pond. Can I put the lily bulbs into say 2-inch rocks in a planting basket or do they need aquatic soil to grow healthy? Thanks.

Hi,

I always use regular garden dirt in the bottom of my water lily baskets, then plant the roots near the top, with the top of the root just slightly above the garden soil, then I put rocks over that to cover the dirt and the water lily root. This works great for me - no special soil needed, though it is recommended to use dirt that isn't overly rich or you might encourage more algae.

Good luck!

Chris
