Calla Lily question

Post by PEIslander »

Hi everyone
It's nice to be on the fourm again. :)

My niece is getting married June 30.we are in zone 5-6.Her favourite flower s are Calla lilies. They are on her invitations and she wants to carry them in her bouquet aas well as decorate the church.

We have potted 47 and put them under grow lights and almost all are up.Our problem is did we start them too early ? If so when should we start another batch?

I am going to try and make some flowers from seed beads to decorate the tables of course using hosta leaves as greenery.

I did some research on the web, and my guess is that you may have started them about a month too early. It appears the average time from planting to bloom is 11 weeks; sometimes a couple weeks more, especially when starting early winter.

Perhaps count back 11 weeks or so from the wedding date and start another batch? I grew these once in containers and found the flowers to be quite long lasting, so that will help.

Nice to see you on the forums again!

Thanks John! That really helps. In that case we should have planted around the 17th of April.I knew someone here would know the answer.
Nice to now I was missed.
I miss my gardens so much I found it so hard to be on the fourms, but I was lurking :D :)

Hey Maureen, good to see you back. I had to read this post because I just love the Calla Lillies, and when I saw your DD is using them in her wedding, I thought I would send you this link. They have lots of stuff for weddings with Calla Lillies!! http://www.alfawedding.com/coll_callalily.htm

Does anyone have an idea how to get Calla Lilies to bloom? I've gotten leaves for years, but no flowers!

Imp,
I just saw this post. I was told (I have not tried it myself) that if you spread wood ash (can't have anything else in it but wood) around the base of the plants, it will make them flower, But I also was told you have to do this before they come out of the ground. I don't know why it would hurt to do it now though and see what happens.
