HVX infected hostas on the market this spring:

Post by Chris_W »

There have been a lot of reports of HVX infected plants both here and from other sources in the trade so I thought I would start another list of plants to watch out for problems. Please feel free to add to this list those plants that you've purchased by mail or saw in batches at nurseries that were infected.

This year's reports of HVX infected batches includes:

New to the lists:

Gypsy Rose
Lady Guinevere
Queen Josephine

Already on the lists, but still a problem or getting worse:

Halcyon (HUGE problem with this variety since plants from both domestic and imported growers are testing positive but showing no symptoms)
Sum and Substance
Honeybells
Night Before Christmas

Do you know of other plants that have made the hit lists?

I've seen Paul's Glory locally in KCMO, but it may be on the old list...

I mentioned in another thread: I saw a Stained Glass showing symptoms. Some others in the batch were questionable (and there were other virused hostas at this nursery). The owner said they came from New Jersey (Princeton grower?).

Just today I became suspicious of my Gypsy Rose which was new a year ago and came from a respected Canadian source.

This is my first post over here though I'm a regular on Dave's Garden. I hope I do this right.

I'll try two pictures.

Has anyone had trouble with Lakeside Shore Master? I'll take a picture tomorrow and show you, but this thread made me think of it. I do not know for sure that mine has it, but the leaf coloring seems odd to me - just bought this year.

Hi Viola Ann,

YES, your Gypsy Rose definitely has Hosta Virus X. The first picture doesn't really show something that would be a definite symptom, but those dark green streaks right along the veins in the second picture are EXACTLY what you are looking for on a gold centered plant.

Sorry :(

Thanks, Chris.
I didn't expect any reprieve although it saddens me. Having the confirmation of my suspicions, I'll do what I have to do and try to do so before I leave town for 3 weeks tomorrow.
Ann :(
