Hi All--Liberty was added to our garden in 2002, only two years after it was introduced. It is a sport of Sagae that has wider margins. The margin width increases with maturity. It starts out the season with a striking yellow edge that gradually becomes whitish. I have it planted in one of the sunnier spots in our garden where it gets as much as 6 hours of mid-day sun. It has not shown any signs of burning. Its growth rate has been slower than average. Starting in 2002, it has measured 9x6, 17x7, 23x12, 33x19 and 38x19. So far Liberty has not had the very upright posture of Sagae so it will have to go through some changes if it is going to obtain an expected mature size of about 39x39.

An excellent hosta, mine appears to be more upright than yours, Hank, maybe it's the angle? It's in full sun all morning. Phyllis sent this to me from the Lyndale sale in '02

Your Liberty is faster growing than mine, Hank. You've sure got a nice full one regardless of size!!

I got mine in the summer of 2003 from the ROHS auction. As I recall I was the only one who bid on it - guess everybody else had fallen asleep by that point after lunch on a hot July day cuz I only paid $17 for it.

Last year mine was finally up to 3 divisions & was 12" H x 21" W. The largest leaf was 5" W x 8.125" L. [Registered leaf size is 9.8" W x 12.6" L - which is just a bit peculiar...

] So mine still has plenty of growing to do.

This year it was up to 4 divisons. Unfortunately the pot I had covering it the 1st nite of the freeze wasn't up to the task & blew off. I covered it with soil & a bucket the next day. I doubt that helped it much though. I'm sure the damage was already done...

Mine is definitely a favorite though - especially in the early spring.
That intense yellow margin can put an eye out though.

I bought a 'Liberty' this year. Looking at the first leaves, it seems this hosta has eveything it takes to be a great hosta. I bought "Magic Fire" at the same time, which apparantly has an even wider margin that stay's bright yellow all the season long

It will take some time to decide which one is my favourite, but I have place for both of them :p

I think it is a testament to just how good Sagae is that there isn't a long list of sports attempting to "improve" on the original. We do have Liberty and Magic Fire, both of which claim to give us wider margins... but then again, growing a dozen Sagae tc to adulthood, I found that there was a ton of variation in the margins among the plants, and even on the same plant. I've often seen Sagae with as much as a third of the leaf in margin and streaking. Still... I got some Liberty from the Lyndale sale in 2002.

All of my Liberty plants are in deep shade. If you think it is slow with some sun, I can confirm that it is incredibly slow in shade. I planted it in 2002... pics are from 2003, 2004, and 2006. At least last year it showed some potential for getting larger. I think the pics also confirm what Hank is experiencing - it just isn't getting the upright shape of Sagae so far...

For me the slow growth and the smaller size of Liberty were the main reasons to buy it. Sagae would just get to big in my garden

Sure, reducing dimensions works, but it's better to use somewhat higher jpg compression to reduce file size. That way the picture doesn't get so small you have to squint to see it...Just take a look at http://www.perennialnursery.com/forums/ ... hp?t=43667 and see how the picture I lightened up for Jeff is only about 60% the file size of the original he posted and now is no longer thumbnailed. The actual picture dimensions have not changed.

Hi--I have started to use Picasa (free from Google) and it works quickly for me. I did have to spend an hour or so reading the instructions but it does have some nice features. I compress my 1 meg originals with a setting of 800x600 and 40% compression.
