INVITATION: Hallson Hosta Forum Garden Party/Tour..UPDATED I

Post by Trudy »

The date for the tour is getting closer. Saturday June 28, Pella, Iowa

We have had a few storms roll through our area lately. Ron and Marlys lost a Bradford Pear a few weeks ago, not sure what other damage they had. Connie and David probably have had some kind of damage also. The gully washing has just been unreal this year.

We lost a 30 ft. tree yesterday, strong winds with rain coming down at 1.75 inches in 30 minutes, moving river rocks rocks and mulch from their places. Hostas were barerooted by the rushing rain in some of the gardens. It has been quite a year, with the ice storms, frosts, cool weather, winds and flooding. The gardens will look a little different, as hostas have had to acclimate to different light than what they are used to.

Well, it could be worse, we could be hauling hoses around to water.

Then with all the rain, comes all the weeds. Oh, if its dry are there different weeds. Some how there are weeds not matter what weather.

We are looking forward to entertaining many Hallson guests in our gardens.

We will have 4 gardens to tour. Ron & Marlys's, David & Betsy's, Connie's, Trudy & Bruce's.

Lunch will be at our house. Italian Hot Beef Sandwiches will be provided, and also drinks.

If you would like to bring a side dish or dessert of some kind feel free. If you are busy and/or dont want to transport food, dont worry about bringing any food, there is usually plenty of food. Lawns chairs would be good thing to take with.

Bring plant or plants for PLANT SWAP...to be held after lunch.

We will have more details about what time the tour starts later, and what garden will be open first. Also will try and post a link to Map Quest with directions.

When at our house for lunch there is plenty of parking on the grass at the Holland Drive entrance.

Please let us know if you will be able to make the tour, and how many guest that you will be bringing along.

Hope to see you soon!

Anything else I forgot, Marlys or Connie please chime in here.

Renaldo......I having a feeling you will be our "Special Guest" since no one else has signed up. I know others did sign up on the other thread, but we are just doing a double check.

Have gotten a few private emails of some people who may come, so there should be a few more attending.

Looks like the guest list will be small this year.

Is it the price of gas or are people just busy? With over 90 Views of this people it looks like people know about this invitiation.

The hostas are looking amazing because of all the rain :D

Hallson Reunion

Post by Marlys »

Trudy,

Thank you for posting this invitaion to our neighborhood. I'm excited to be a part of this fun day.

I certainly will try to fix some food of some sort. Ron wants to know if you are serving your famous Almond Bars. I have a new 'Frog-eyed' fruit salad recipe that makes a huge bowl and is fun & really good. I will try to fix it for us.

Tell me the rules of the hosta swap / games. How many hostas do we need to bring with us? etc!

I think Linda P is still trying to figure out a way to make it and stay over for the summer tour / auction of our ROHS.

I still have my cabin available with air conditioning, full bathroom facilities, just no beds. So if anyone would like to grab a sleeping bag or cot and stay over, they are sure welcome. (We only have one bedroom in our house. Reldon could bring his expresso machine with him. And the cabin lawn is good for a couple small campers too as is our driveway.

Jackie had posted she wanted to be here with a hosta friend or two. It is difficult for Jackie since she doesn't drive. And I think Sue D & Jo were hoping to make it too!

Jimmy Mac - Good to know you & Lois are still alive and planning to be here. I've been to your gardens more than once. It's time for you to visit here. / The hosta you shared with me last year is awesome in my gardens. I still love it!

I'm inviting my daughter & SIL to join us. And they are moving; but their hosta garden is lovely again this year; and Robin said if people wanted to tour the gardens they were more than welcome.

Just pray we are spared all the awful weather catastrophies that so many others are contending with. It seems petty to worry about hosta gardens when people are loosing everything & lives are being lost.

Count our blessing every day and be joyous in life.

It was so much fun going to Jimmy & Lois place. They have such wonderful hostas. Jimmy Winter Vision from you is looking great. Marlys can't wait to see you guys again. My big hostas up north of the house got a little wind blown last night. DH said about 2:00 am the house shook pretty go. I finally was sound asleep. I will have to think about what to bring to swap.

I know!! :x I got the email version of the Shady Choice newsletter last nite. I had thought they were going with a different date since Butch [who puts the tour for Shady Choice together] was planning on coming to the ROHS tour when I talked to him at the 1st meeting. So I was a little bit perplexed since they've always been on different dates before... :???:

Reldon, I just hate when I have to make tough choices. I want to go to all the tours. We were kinda talking about going to the ROHS tour. Too bad they are on the same day. Our Bellevue Garden Club Tour is on the 28th & 29th, and the Dodge House Garden Walk is on the 29th too. I am scheduled to work the 29th, but I am trying to get it off. Do you know how many gardens are in the ROHS tour? We have already seen two of the shady choice gardens. Maybe we will see you at one of the tours.

Trudy, I will be there! :P
Do you have a time in mind when you want people to start to arrive?
Not that I would be there early

I have talked DH into driving, but I have no clue as to if He plans to stick around or not. As you know, we used to camp at Roberts Creek park every summer for 11 days for the Knoxville Nationals in August, so we know your neck of the woods very well, having gone for 10 years in a row.

I got a room for that night at the super 8 in Knoxville, because there's races that night, so it's going to be a full day for me! Hostas and Races, what more could I ask for???
:D

I don't know what I will be bringing for a dish, but I'll whip up something tasty, and I plan to bring 3 Hostas for the swap.

Leslie - I think there are going to be 4 gardens altogether. One I've heard of before, but never seen. It has a treehouse & a bunch of other neat features. I can't remember what was said at the spring meeting about 2 of the gardens. The lunch & auction will be at a garden just outside of Altoona. The people have their hosta business based there at their home. I was there several years ago. They were just getting things going at that location so it'll be interesting to see what it looks like now.

I know you've seen Butch's garden, but he was telling me at the spring meeting that he's changed it quite a bit & gotten rid of a lot of hostas. So I was hoping to see his too. Although I could drop out any time & do that now that he's retired.

Hallson Reunion

Post by Marlys »

Just to let you all know, we are all at the National Hosta Convention this week in sunny St. Louis.

It's a great time!

Just to let everyone know, you are all welcome in Pella, June 28th. Come for fun & stay for the hosta games!

Josh is here vending with Jim (Mr Hienz) & Sue (Josh's mom & buisness partner).

Ken is here. Ken says he can't make the Hallson Reunion cause he only has 2 more weeks to put the finishing touches on his gardens for the regional convention tours. What an excuse!!

New York - George is here. Ron & I enjoyed his company on the tour bus to & from the Missouri Botanical Gardens yesterday.

Lots of other hosta-friends from previous conventions are here too. Some still remember me from when I was a bus captain on the 2004 national convention tours.

I heard Dr. Dave rolled in last evening. I haven't seen him yet.

Danny is here.

Jerome is here from Scotland but he is English. He says don't say he's Scottish.

The vendor sales began yesterday. It's always like a sea of green with a shark feeding frenzy!

The first buzz!!! is all about the tiny streaked tc plants of Blue Mouse Ears. You can pay $85.00 from Bill Sivers or $125.00 from the boyz @ Naylor Creek. It's so cute!

Full reports at the Hallson Reunion.

Mixed-Up

Post by Marlys »

Roxanne,

People are asking for you & Jimmy & Lois & Lisa & Hosta Rod here in St Louis.

Jerome is not Jerome, but Stephen from Scotland who is English, not Scottish. Yeah, I get all those guy with sexy accents mixed up.

And guess who was the biggest bidder at the auction Thursday evening. Yep! Danny.

Reldon rolled in on Thursday too. Our dinner table was all Hallsonites. It was fun!

Dr. Dave had entries in the sdlg class again. He gave me the grand tour of the 'Hosta Show' room today. It is so wonderful to talk 'Hosta' to good friends. Ron was taking a nap while I spent over 2 hours in at the Silent Auction & the Hosta Show, looking & listening (learning) & talking 'Hosta'.

Josh won some blue ribbons in the cut leaf show too. I can't think what right now. I have hardly seen him as the vending thing keeps them busy a lot of the time.

Reldon was on our tour bus this morning & kept me company & pointed out special plants of interest in the gardens.

It was rainy this morning but not enough to cancel the tours. We saw some wonderful gardens this morning.

Tomorrow the weather is suppose to be perfect for the garden tours but I'm thinkin' I will be tired as Ron & I and our nieghbors, David & Betsy who are here at the convention too went to a Stevie Nicks concert tonight. Just got back and thought I should check in with you all.

Hi Everyone,
I am so looking forward to seeing everyone on the 28th. I worked outside all day yesterday and hope to do more today between rain showers.
I lost my sister last month and then my Mom ended up in the hospital, so it has been a trying and busy time again for me. I finally took the time to read e-mails and check the
forum today, so thought I better post and let you know
that I am still around.
It sounds like the Hallson folks are having fun at the convention. I wanted to go, but could not get off work. I do plan on going to the Midwest though.
I better start checking out which hostas I want to divide for the gathering.
See you then.
