Last year, I took my Halcyon sports (and their sports) and put them all together. I LOVE the look ... the colors all work perfectly together.
Since my hubby has been researching his family tree, I thought hmmmmm....What if I did the same with my hostas? So, I took my inventory list of 400 or so and started researching their ancestry... focusing mainly on sports. Then, in the spring as I move the hostas around and plant new ones, I can create family groupings.
Who else consciously chooses to put hostas near their relatives? Got any pics?

Re: Hosta Family Trees
I have some tendency to put things together:
a Halcyon/June group (but in too much shade);
a Striptease sport main group, with some other smaller groups;
a Francee sports group;
a Fragrant Bouquet sports group;
a Whirlwind sports group;
a Gold Standard sports that look like Moonlight group;
a Mouse sports group;
a rectifolia sports group;
a Tokudama sports group;
a Tiara sports group;
a Sum and Substance sports group.
and then some other groupings:
a white centered group;
a late flowering group;
a Lakeside group - this developed by accident;
a small blue group.

Your halcyon / June familly need more sun.
Remember I am far up north, but one more food away from a fence gave the blue color anfd for June the blue / green color ... one more changed June to blue Yellow and one more to blue/ gereen and Yellow/ white

Re: Hosta Family Trees
Ya know, Pia, I tend to like June and Halcyon more when they get less sun. I have a couple of June in morning sun and one in full shade and I like the full shade one better.Your halcyon / June familly need more sun.
I was having a conversation with Kim Larsen at the AHS Convention this summer as I was readying my leaves for leaf show... one was a June leaf. She said that she never shows her June leaves because there is so so much difference of opinion in what June is "supposed" to look like.
But I think that's part of what's exciting with being a hosta lover. What my eye loves, yours may not... and vice versa. And it's all ok!

Here is a small cluster of Halcyon sports - June, May and Touch of Class. These get more sun. These shots are a sequence through the season - roughly - since there aren't any mid season shots.

I like grouping families together! I don't have a picture of all three of them, but I have 'Maui Buttercups,' 'Rainforest Sunrise,' and 'Tropical Storm' together and I really like the look. This photo was taken before 'Tropical Storm' was added. This is a bed I created by my front walk last year.
