Sport from Blaze of Glory needs a name

Post by Chris_W »

I'm still trying to come up with a name for this plant and thought I'd throw this one out for suggestions. This is a green centered sport of Blaze of Glory that starts out brilliant yellow and then the center darkens to a light to medium green like you see now. Since the edge is just like Blaze of Glory it also darkens a little, but not as much, and in some bright light I suspect the edge would stay more yellowish too.

We have two clumps of this plant and I want to get it named and registered before I divide it up again, which I hope to do soon and maybe offer a couple divisions next year. So what do you think? People ask about these all the time but they really need a better tag than just "sport of Blaze of Glory". :)

Last year we had a sport of Plantaginea with a light center that we were thinking of calling Sublime. Well, that sport didn't fair too well, coming back with 4 eyes and only one is like the original sport and the other 3 are plantaginea again, so it will need a lot more work before anything comes of that one. But I like the name Sublime so much that I thought about giving this one that name. In a way I think that almost fits this one better, but would love to hear your suggestions too.

Thanks for checking this out!

Chris

I think Blaze of Glory might lend itself to some Olympic-themed (sport!) name, but you might want to wait until the end of the games to see if anything inspires you. Certainly not the U.S. men's gymnastic team last night, poor guys, if you're looking to be inspired by winners. Maybe something like Blazing Bolt if Usain Bolt wins again?

But doesn't "going out in a blaze of glory" mean to lose but not without making a dramatic, glorious exit first?

I could never be a hybridizer, naming them is too hard. :)

I imagine the naming is easier than all the rest!

Beyond Glory
Boast of Glory
Burst of Glory
Flash of Glory
Gloryshine
Glory Glory
Glory Show
Glory Sublime
Glory's Bluster
Glory's Tribute
Homage to Glory

And I just checked; none are taken yet.

Do you guys really think it needs either blaze or glory in the name? Personally I believe this one could stand on its own without any real correlation with the parent. Sometimes I think that is a bit overdone, trying to keep the names all the same. Or is there some way to get a familial name some other way? Of those mentioned, I would say Hosta 'Tribute' might have a nice ring to it.

Then maybe take it just a little further, if needed, to something like Hosta 'Tribute to Heroes'?

Hero's Medal? Interesting that there are no registered hostas with "Medal" in the name. (The unregistered "Medal of Honor" at HostaLibrary looks like an unstable 'June' to me, but the database says it's a 'Blue Cadet' sport.)

Having said that, I decry overuse of "hero" when generally applied to sports figures. Too often it is far from truth, compared to true heroes in the world. But that doesn't make "Hero's Medal" a bad name for a hosta. It still has a loose connection to 'Blaze of Glory'.

Why does the name have to apply to sports figures? :hmm:

Hmm, I'm not sure where you guys are going with this one. The more I think about it, the more I keep thinking that Hosta 'Tribute' might be all we need.

Still like the name Sublime though

I need to contact JGH to get his input. He's the king of knowledge when it comes to names, though I think he could put a spin on just about anything we decided :)

Sublime or Tribute are good enough for me.
I prefer single word names. They fit on the labels better.
