Hank,
So, it is true, some weedlings grow into beautiful seedlings.
Looks like a first cousing to hosta 'Manhattan'.
Lovely plant.
Thanx!

Remember - Green is a Color
Josh, are we the only 2 green advocates here? Favorites - Java, Quilting Bee, Moonlight Sonata, Rupifraga, Lederhosen, Yoshie, Red Stepper, Red Dragon, & yes, I too, like Lanciolia a lot and Birchwood Ruffled Queen, Golden Anniversary, Abiqua Drinking Gourd, Lakeside Main Man, Lakesdie Prophecy, Ven...

Aristocrat
Hank, I've never disagreed with you before over a hosta but Aristocrat is one of my favorite little plants in my garden. However, it was a nice multi-eye plant when I bought and it gets quite a bit of sunshine. Maybe I just didn't have to endure the waiting game. I love my Aristocrat. I was just won...

Plant Markers
I use plant markers for EON Industires style E-10 and a Brother PT-1250 (cheap one) label maker with TZ tape that is weather resistant. They hold up very well - years out in the garden. http://www.eonindustries.com/catalog/ http://www.eonindustries.com/ There has been much discussion on this topic o...

Scotch Moss
Scotch Moss lived over for me here in Iowa zone 5A. I was so excited that it lived and flourished in the sun. It also survived in medium shade but not dense shade and it did not survive being buried in leaves without any sunshine. Imagine that! I use an assortment of thymes and sedums in the opening...

Garden Path
Linda, I've been considering doing away with grass pathways in my garden. I get so tired of fighting dandelions and seeding crabgrasses, etc. I bought a push mower with a bag but still the weed seeding continues. Ron wants to do wood mulch pathways. I was thinking pea gravel but I really hate...

Rainy Days
Hey, Linda, I used to hear, "The air is awful close" from my grandparents too. I too, have suffered from sinus / allergy / chills / aches. Actually spent nearly the whole day in bed last Thursday. I am usually never sick. Still suffering with sinus headaches, congestion, scratchy throat for post-nas...

Culling
I admit, I get emotionally involved with my sdlgs. I think we all do with our first-born babies. We learn as they grow - we can't keep 'em all. So...I adopt them out to good homes. :P I give them away to garden guests. :D I donate them to the Ways & Means auction @ my local garden club. Each m...

Twilight & Morning Light
Twilight & Morning Light were both finicky for me & both dwindled to nothingness! I would not recommend either of them as vigorous garden plants. Money could be better spent else-where.

setting seed
The majority of my plants are not setting seed this year at least, not to the extent of anywhere near normal amount. Bees do the pollinating here but hopefully, after retirement I'll give AI a try. AI (farmer talk - artificial insemination) Galaxy had only one flower stalk that set seed and I had to...

Lela
Lela, You won't be sorry you spared Frosted Jade's life! It is a wonderful plant! A standout in the garden when it finally 'grows up'. Other hostas are disappointing at maturity. The ones I can think of right now are Pizzazz & Sugar Daddy. Maybe Josh should write about duds too! His new column could...

Author / Hosta Journal
Josh, I agree with Linda P 'The Ugly Duckling' thing could become a regular 'tripicka' column in the 'Hosta Journal'. Good job! Great photos too. Did you take those also? I had the very same experince with 'Frosted Jade'. It just sat there looking like every other narrow white margin hosta then abou...

tc true story
A couple of years ago a little greenhouse near my home thought they had gotten a shipment of the then new 'Spring Fling'. Well, they were all green & obviously not the hosta 'Spring Fling'. The owner didn't really know what Spring Fling was suppose to look like but I did and so did Jackie & Connie. ...

Not Good News
OK! I went out and cut all the ugly leaves off Sugar Daddy this morning. Now if more tatters and tears appear - it's off to the compost pile with him. Surely, someone has grown SD long enough to know if being way ugly  is his real character. Mine is only a couple years old I think or maybe 3. ...

APMC sport
Yes, Ann, please post your picture of Allan P Mc Connell sport. I am very interested in seeing it. I too, have a sport of sorts from APMC that I have been babying along for a couple years now. It nearly died this spring so it is just about back to square one.
Thanx,

Sugar Daddy
It's been on my list to post asking about Sugar Daddy. :?: Mine was pretty when immature but this year it looks really ugly. :( All the white margin is tattered & torn. I suspect the blue/green is outgrowing it causing the dreaded drawstring affect. I am interested in knowing if this is true ...

I really hate to admit it but I all ready begged Dr. Dave for an eye of his sdlg. It is totally awesome.
But Dr. Dave was the one seen down on one knee in front of a fair damsel seated in the lobby of the hotel. Don Deane saw it too!

Help! I'm buying hostas & I can't stop!

Thanx! Josh - Jeff seemed really nice & maybe just a litte shy. I had a nice conversation with him @the picnic gathering. Not everyone got in on this group project. David, Ken, & who else is MIA? Oh, Trudy & Connie; I think were in the gift shop! So we shot them later! Thanx! David for starting this thread. Back row - Hosta Rod, Jerone, Dr. Dave, Jim Hienz, Jimmy Mac, Kimmy, Jamie, the guy that works on the rail ...
