Re: acer griseum is a beautiful tree, but...

Hosta should do just fine under an Acer griseum.

Acer griseum will have some surface roots, but certainly not like a silver maple, Acer saccharinum, or Norway maple, Acer platanoides.

Acer griseum is one of THE most ornamental of all maple species, IMHO.

Re: Pagoda Dogwood

The pagoda dogwood (Cornus alternifolia) is a very nice small tree/shrub. This is an under story tree so appreciates some afternoon shade or light shade all day. There are also a couple of very nice variegated cultivars out there worth considering, too. The best of which is C. a. Golden Shadows™. Th...

It is unlikely that you will get an oak tree to root, regardless of the technique you use. Even under greenhouse conditions it is virtually impossible to root an oak. Collect some acorns from the tree and plant them as soon as possible and start another tree that way. The resulting tree will still b...

Those buds are not yet open. Give them a few more days (depending on the weather) and they will open all the way. Your plant is establishing its root system rather than putting all of its energy into flowers. Once the root system is well established, the plant will start to grow faster, in addition ...

The magnolia is a Saucer magnolia, Magnolia x soulangiana (or sometimes spelled x soulangeana). The Saucer magnolia is a very popular tree (or very large shrub) and there are at least 30 cultivars of this plant selected for flower color, bloom time, etc. Some of the more unusual types may only be av...

Are you sure the Latin name of the plant is correct? Salix alba is the white willow (alba = white), but the tree will have green leaves. All of the references that I have found on the web show Salix alba as an upright growing tree, not a weeping tree. It's possible (very likely) that the nursery has...

Doris J, You might want to have an ISA certified arborist take a look at your tree. That fungus appears to be growing on the heartwood of the branch (the bark was damaged/removed and the wood is now rotting). The fungus is helping the decomposition along and soon the weight of that branch will cause...

Can you describe the foliage? What is the color (blue, green, ?) and does the plant have needles or scale-like foliage? I'm guessing that the tree is a Chamaecyparis (Xanthocyparis or Callitropsis) nootkatensis cultivar. The botanists are not quite sure what the correct name of this plant is, but Ch...
