Re: Hosta of the Day - Galaxy

One of my favorites. I have two mature plants in beds and a division in a pot, all of which are just going to start flowering--in fact I just made my first cross on one of them this morning. I have been fortunate in that I have never had to "clean up" my Galaxy. It comes back year after year with go...

Re: Hallson Summer Hosta Swap

I, like several others, have not been to this site in a while and was pleasantly surprised to receive a PM inviting me to join in the fun. In past swaps, whether it was on this site or others I have always had a pleasurable experience, and hope that the recipients of my exchanges felt the same way. ...

Yellow Arrow

I just posted this pic on the Seedgrowers Forum but thought I would ask here also to check with those of you that don't frequent that site. I found this yellow sport on Blue Arrow and couldn't find any info on it. Anybody know of a named yellow sport of Blue Arrow? This isn't a first is it?

Re: Now what?

By no means an expert here, but I'll chime in. If they were mine, I would pot them in a course, well draining potting mix--something with 50 % pine bark fines seems to work really well, or anything similar. I would then place them in a south or east facing window and allow them to adjust to natural ...

Prom Night

'Prom Night' is the garden name I have given to this new addition of mine. It is a "settled" eye from a 2006 streaked seedling of mine which was a cross of Christmas Tree Gala and Komodo Dragon. I just removed this eye from the mother plant which was six eyes. The majority of the plant has gone all ...

They are "Oh so cute" at this stage, let's hope it doesn't require a hosta diet later.

Rather unusual to get a two colored seedling from a parent that was not a streaked breeder. Looks good and thanks for sharing

Re: storing pollen?

Hi audre, Stick with this forum for the vast amount of knowledge it provides and the friendships that can be gained here. If you are serious about the hybridizing aspect of this hobby, another site that will provide information in that direction is hostaseedlings.com. Here is a link from their site ...

Re: Curious - what makes one a "hybridizer"?

I'm going to stick my nose in here one more time. I think the term "hybridizer" has been used too generically, just like any nose tissue is a "kleenex". Maybe some of the most "well known" hybridizers are more well known for their introductions rather than their hybridizing efforts. And no disrespec...

Re: Curious - what makes one a "hybridizer"?

Hi All, I'm gonna agree with John on this one (and of course, anyone who is following his same train of thought). I consider myself a hybridizer. I do the "beat the bees" thing, dabbing pollen, recording crosses, meticulis records, germ the seed, grow the plant. Am I a 'renowned' hybridizer?--of cou...

Explaination please

I know very little about daylilies. To be honest, I don't have warm feelings toward them other than the day they blossom :D . The pictures I've seen of some are breathtaking, including ones posted here. I "get" what some are trying to accomplish in their hybridizing efforts, just like goals I have w...

Re: Question about keeping streakers streaked

I agree with those above to do the surgery. I haven't heard of just snapping the green eye off, but rather "twisting" the green eye off in an attempt to remove it from the crown (and the dormant buds associated with it). This method works better on some hostas than it does on others depending on how...

Re: Secret Trade Received!

I haven't participated in this (or any other) secret trade in a couple of years, and I realize that it's not over or at least not everybody has reported in yet, but the generosity of some of the traders and the variety of plants sent astounds me. I felt as if I might have cheated my trader when I on...

Re: Deer with good taste

Denise, I hope your next post is titled "Deer that tastes good" (I have a few recipies if you need them :D :D :D ) I get an occasional deer through here even though I don't live next to a creek or timber. This year they "topped" one of my tomatoes and trapesed through a seedling bed (and missed all ...

Re: reworking established bed

I am fortunate enough to have that black Iowa soil to work with. I did however burm a couple of beds and without realizing it got into a pile of dirt that contained some heavy blue clay--you know, the kind that pottery people throw on their wheel and the same kind that they line the bottom of newly ...

It's not fair to have that kind of landscaping to work with. Please post some pictures where the hostas are overlapping each other and smaller ones are overtaken by the larger ones so I can compare your garden to mine. I'm having serious thoughts of getting out the Roundup, spraying everything down,...

Very appealing view! Love the wooden fence in the background. (and, at least at my place, those aren't weeds--just additional groundcover  )

Have fun at the convention.

I've always felt you need the "plain green" ones to make the others stand out. When the "plain green" stands out, its a bonus.

I agree with Dave, although I don't have any experience with growing the two together. I would think that the drip irrigation would minimize the effects of root competition regardless of the source.

Your idea sounds and looks appealing, Myro.

Re: Great Expectations

Hi Linda, I think I would do a combo of what was suggested already. I would give it another year to see what happens. If it's going blue or sporting, the eye that this shoot produces next year will be lost whether you take it out now or next year. The chances that this eye will produce a normal colo...
