Re: What is black death virus, KHT?

Black Death usually is apparent on the veins. If you have ever seen symptoms like this in your hellebore collection then it would be prudent to dispose of infected plants (or better, all plants). http://www.hellebores.org/images/hxhbackdeath.jpg http://www.hellebores.org/images/blackdeath.jpg Fortun...

Re: Epimedium & Hellebore in Full Sun. Arisaema Taiwanense s

Lisa, it does depend on the plant. Like Andi, I grow lots of hellebores and epmediums. some (H. hercegovinus etc) need full sun while others are more happy with dappled shade and moist, cool soils. Generally speaking, virtually all of them will thrive in 4-5 hours of direct sun per day. mine get aft...

Re: A Few Hellebore Pictures

MB, that dark is excellent, but the one from Phedar is very special. There are comparatively few plants like that in the trade. Is the foliage on that one typical of Helleborus x hybridus or is it more heavily divided?

Re: First bloom has opened

Oops, sorry karma. A little late but yes, it's a clean plant. This is another photo taken the same year (12/06). Unfortunately, it has bloomed early every year (apparently genetic). Might be a nice trait in a milder winter climate, but it can kill the reproductive parts of the early flowers in my ga...

Re: Hellebore seed exchange?

imagooch, That's Helleborus foetidus. Individual plants may live only a few years but will produce many seedlings. They are also fast growing compared to the types of hellebores discussed above. Really, very different plants that have little in common with plants like Helleborus x hybridus other tha...

Hi Herb, Just an FYI note: your plant is Helleborus x sternii, which is a hybrid of H. argutifolius and H. lividus. Yours is a nice one. In addition, your 'Ours in March' is indeed H. niger, which is receptive of H x sternii pollen, and if your keen it's worth a shot as the three way cross produces ...

If you're ordering the plants as opposed to seed they should be from tissue culture, otherwise sellers couldn't use those names. If they are the Saul's plants they will likely be from a lab in Forida or somewhere and then bought as little plugs later to be sold by one of their wholesalers. I'd recom...

Very nice Andi. You are lucky, the bulk of my plants bloomed very early (Dec-Jan) and maybe 80% or so of all flowers were killed=no seed. There are a few opening now or still in bud which would usually be the 'normal' flowering time here. I suppose the upside is I'll be less confused about what to p...

Hi Jeanne, Sorry I just noticed this or would have replied sooner. I think you did the right thing. Your boughs will help shade and insulate during cold, cloudless days so that is good. You could always peek underneath and see what is happening. Hardiness probably won't affect the root growth but if...

Hi OC. I don't fertilize them at all, but if you want to you could give them most any general purpose type for perennials. The active roots of most mature hellebores are a foot or more underground, so it is best to prepare the soil deeply with compost and/or a time-released fertilizer when planting....

Very nice David. In the P. japonica photo, what are the herbaceous plants growing behind the hostas, closest to the house? I first thought they might be hellebores but can't tell. One has very nicely divided foliage.

Very nice hostako. I looked up G. cinereum var. subcaulescens and like it. It seems to have a broad natural range. Where did your plant originate?

Alexa, I have a deer problem to the extent that I no longer bother growing hostas etc. and have never had a deer eat a hellebore (I have grown thousands from seed). I have heard of deer eating hellebore leaves (not sure if it's accurate), but if a deer ate too much the deer would probably die. I con...

Hi Alexa, the first 7 are essentially all the same I would think, likely Helleborus x hybridus. The last two will also do well for you. H. foetidus is one of the best foliage perennials on the market.

Hello Antje, There really isn't much to know about hellebores that is different than most other plants in terms of cultivation requirements. They are among the easiest and most resilient perennials and thrive in many garden conditions. The one thing that I would suggest is to give your hellebores pl...
