Re: Black Squirrel!!!

Metro Detroit Area has a black squirrel population - they cross from Canada on bridge guide wires. They seem to be agressive, chasing native red and gray squirrels away. There has been a noticeable drop in the population of the two latter.

Hostas for Some Sun

Appreciate the numerous posts on hostas for a somewhat sunny spot. Am working on a rather large memorial garden surrounded by mature hardwoods. The majority of plants will be starts donated by members of our club. The project was put on hold as several trees were removed and a water source installed...

Hostas For Sunny Spot

I had no success in finding any info when I did a forum search on hostas that can tolerate a sunny spot. Either a morning sun/ afternoon shade spot or the opposite planting site. I have read recommendations that varigated hostas are more sun tolerant and others that recommend solid color hostas for ...

Late Fall Planting

Several suggestions for late planting: Dig planting hole somewhat wider so roots have room to get settled quickly. Cover with up to 3 inches of mulch now, shredded leaves would be good. After ground is frozen mulch deeply. Provide water on a weekly basis or when soil is dry a few inches down. Do thi...

Pressing Heuchera foliage

While experimenting with foliage and blooms to dry for potpourri and pressed flowers I pressed one leaf of 'Plum Pudding', 'CremeBrulee', 'Ginger Ale' and 'Palace Purple'. The leaves pressed beautifully and are holding their color well. Silver is now the dominant color on the dried 'Plum Pudding'. O...

Growing Chinese Lanterns Plant

I was given a slip of the above plant with instructions to plant it in the sun. Which I did. While surfing the net I find numerous reference to the plant being a magnet for metallic flea beetle which cannot always be successfully treated for removal. Since this plant will be close to a crawlspace ve...

Dahlias Changing color

Could anyone venture a guess as to why, after three years, saucer size deep purple dahlias would bloom pink and have smaller blooms this year? The plants were dug up in the fall and replanted each spring.

Iris color has changed

Three years ago I had 3 iris that were a stunning dark purple with a pale lilac throat, a bit of white and a brilliant yellow beard. This year all three plants produced blooms twice the size of previous years but the blooms were a solid white with only a brilliant yellow beard. Any ideas? Did the pl...

Biblical Garden

http://www.joellesteele.com/article-17.htm

Check this website for Biblical Herbs. One could do plant markers with some of the bible verses. Could be an interesting Sunday School or Adult Study to take ones' bible into the garden, look up the verse and visually see the plant. There is a Q&A link.

Have received good tips from my limited visits. Look forward to having more time to browse all the topics as the cold weather forces me indoors. Love the sayings at the end of some posts, they brighten my visit. Since laughter is exercise for the brain I get my daily workout.

Butterfly Garden

Eradicating Trumpet Vine

When I remove invasive plants I keep all above ground growth cut down to bare stubs and then cover the stubs with something to keep light out. Sometimes keeping leaves removed will deprive the roots of nutrients and the plant will die off. This is an organic solution, but if you are not adverse to u...
