need some pictures
I let myself be pursuaded into giving a talk on Hostas, and find myself short on the use of hostas in the garden. I thought I had taken enough over the summer, but find myself short in one area Any pictures that you could share with me would be really appreciated. I don't have any showing their use ...

first frost
My First Frost has developed an eye that is completely cream --- the same colour as the edge. It is in the centre of the clump. Should I just watch and wait to see what happens?
Does this happen very often - I have had it about 5 years

Bonnie - If you do take the devilled eggs - keep them VERY COLD until they are ready to serve, and then set out only half at a time - salmonella runs amok at this time of year - I've had food poisoning twice - and it "ain't purty" First you think you're going to die and then you'r afraid you're not!...

Re: Hello From Peterborough County, Ontario
Hi There Big Daddy
I hail from the grest southwest (of Ontario) and today is like a sauna outdoors, so I'm catching up. Welcome to the forum.
I love trading too and have some really nice hostas from trades (closing in on 200). I'll watch for your lists. Let me know when you post them.

Re: A small pet peeve of mine (and I say this with a grin)...
I have a few too. I was a teacher and of course I saw some "interesting" spellings over the years. Some of my pet peeves are: ad for add, also add for ad where , were, wear misused The spelling someone wanted is touche with an acute accent over the last e. It is pronounced 'too-shay' It is no wonder...

This year we "hosted" a family of rabbits that ate all the leavings under the bird feeder, and then turned their attention to my hostas - especially the new ones. Their preferred choices were: Praying hands and Abiqua Recluse that were eaten down to 2" stems, as well as an established Amy Elizabeth ...

Re: Hallson's Spring Hosta Trade 2009
I would love to be in on the secret trade, but I am certain that you know we can't ship across the border without a certificate but if there are other Canuck hosta-holics out there who would like to participate, I'd be delighted to trade. (a laughing hosta emoticon??)

You are right about that - I had to do it too. It sometimes didn't look too nesty until we got the hang of it, but it did protect the books.

I thought I had posted this - so it may appear twice I was afraid that I would drop it or somehow damage the paper cover on this lovely, but heavy book, SO I asked at the public library and they covered it with the nice heavy plastic they use - and asked for a donation of $4. (I gave them a little m...

I had a good idea and thought I would share it.
I took mine to the library and they covered it with plastic. Now I won't have to worry about ripping that gorgeous paper cover.

interesting repellent for voles and moles
As Ontario has recently banned the sale and use of pesticides, weed killers and insecticides, I attended a lecture by our local municipal horticulturalist and he recommended Murphy's oil soap - apparently voles and moles can't stand the smell!!! So I thought I'd pass it on... I have not yet had thi...

Re: Best plant ID tags - opinion?
The best Idea I have had for labels is to find old aluminum venetian blinds - I cut them lengthwise into 1/2 " strips and the into various lengths . I use wax china marking pencils as they don't fade like "permanent" Sharpies, or "fade-proof so-called permanent garden marking pens" I sharpen them ca...

Re: Got my signed copy of Hostapedia - Yipeee!!!
I got mine a few days ago too What a book - so complete, but I agree about the weight and general awkwardness of handling it. I really wixsh it had been bound in two or three volumes and sold as a set - more expensive, but soooo much easier to handle. AM really enjoying it. Every day I sit down, rea...
