Re: Possible root-knot nematode?
I don't see any sign of root knot nematodes, but the hosta has fusarium root and crown rot. There is really no saving it so I would trash it and start over. You should dig up the soil around that spot to get as much of the old roots as possible and put some fresh soil or compost in its place, but kn...

I've heard that there are some sports of it out there, but they aren't plants that we grow or sell. Does anyone know the names of the known sports out there at the moment?

Re: HVX on Striptease?
It sort of does, but also might be frost damage from when the plant was first coming up. Is there some bubbling of the tissue on the back side of the leaf? The reason I suspect frost damage is that the markings stop about midway down the leaf and then there is nothing. That leads me to believe that ...

Re: HVX or sunburn on Brother Stefan?
Welcome to the forums. That doesn't look like HVX to me and like you suspect it looks like some kind of damage on the surface of the leaves. I'm not sure that it is typical of sunburn but it is not typical of Hosta Virus X. There is a chance that this is damage indirectly caused by too much fertiliz...

Re: Question about Hosta 'Oshima Silk' parentage
Hi Waldo, Hosta 'Oshima Silk' is registered as a white edged seedling of Hosta pycnophylla by Mark Zilis/Q & Z Nursery that Mark acquired in Japan. The picture Mark used for marketing in the catalog and on the plant tags is this one: oshima-silk-zilis.jpg Clearly that is completely different from th...

Re: Harbor Lane Gardens - martagons in bloom!
Very pretty - they obviously love the garden conditions. We planted some white and purple ones here when we moved in 2004 and unfortunately they slowly died off - I think the deer devastated them over the years - but a few little seedlings popped up here and there and those are finally flowering thi...

For me a profile picture really helps too. Pictures from up above don't show the habit/shape that well.
Looking forward to your pictures!

The flowers aren't right for Lemontini - and the flowering time is wrong too. The size fits for Cheatin Heart, and I can't think of anything else quite like this.

Re: Sugar Daddy
I discontinued Sugar Daddy a long time ago. Yes, it just gets ugly. I don't believe it is the same problem as spring desiccation, but I agree it is likely a genetic problem. Unfortunately the Dutch wholesalers have picked this one up and are selling it quite a bit, and touting it as a "new" hosta, s...

Hi,
this one reminds me a little of Hosta 'Cheatin Heart'. How tall and wide is the foliage on this?

Re: Do these plants look infected?
The third picture has some strange coloring along the veins, but it is really hard to see as the lighting is a bit too bright. The others I don't really see anything unusual, other than a back leaf in the first picture that is pretty splotched but might be cold damage. Any chance of getting a better...

Re: Love Pat with Virus?
Nope, that looks fine. Sometimes hostas will grow fast and the color won't show through right away and you get a look similar to this. The correct coloring is on the veins which tells me this isn't a virus. When you get "bleeding" along the veins that is the wrong color - lighter or darker - then th...

Re: How to handle HVX
Best way for now is to just wait out the summer and dig in the fall since these are so well established. In testing it was found that it is difficult to spread HVX when the plants are dormant, so it is really only best to dig up the infected plants in the fall when they are close to other things. I ...

Re: Sunburn?
I don't have much problem with sunburn but frost/freeze damage and the spring desiccation type burn is on going to be bad on a few varieties. One thing I have been pointing out to people is that the hostas were up about 6 weeks earlier than normal BUT the trees leafed out on schedule. So the hostas ...

Re: Is 2017 Over Yet?
Wow, that is a lot of rain. I didn't realize you had that much, but heard about all the wind. I sure hope things improve in the garden and healthwise. We have also had a rough start to the year weather wise. Really early warm brought the hostas out of dormancy way too early and just when it looked l...

I'm glad you took a closer look. The blues often are hard to notice when they have HVX, but that one has enough faint markings to make me think that you made the right choice to take it back.
