Re: Iron Phosphate Slug Baits - Warning!
Thank you all for the good wishes, a successful and enjoyable 2010 to you too! Sugar, you are in Belgium, so by those Escargots, you probably mean the 'cool' snails with their houses, which my grandkids watch and are fascinated with when they visit. I throw those into the neighbors tall grass...

Re: Iron Phosphate Slug Baits - Warning!
Hi Renaldo, Thank you , I am fine, but I did have 3 rough garden years and am still doing damage control. 2 years in a row we had a hard freeze in June with one ft. of heavy snow, the 3rd year a devastating hail storm (end of June) shredding everything. To top that, the trees that lost all their lea...

Re: Iron Phosphate Slug Baits - Warning!
Hi Bill, Living in Switzerland and knowing, that we do have very high requirement for products to get the 'bio' (organic growing) label, I was curious. But Safari can't open the link. Well,I had another look at the address and noticed there is definitely something wrong with it. First; <www2.> would...

Hi Ed, Congratulations, neat seedling but it may drive you crazy!   In 1994 I crossed Joan Senior x American Revolution (Joan senior came from tissue culture and had variegated leaves in early spring, lost the plant now). But several of the seedlings were variegated. How exciting, I ...

Fair Maiden etc.
Failure to grow hostas in my garden are blamed on the short season and cool summers. Many minis will usually survive the first winter but shrink in size and then not make it through the second winter. This happened with Fair Maiden (I killed all 12 plants over a period of 3 years). Lakeside Kaleidos...

Cleaning up my Iris pictures, I found this PCN seedling with tiny holes and spots. What insect could be responsible?

If Pete Ruh says 'Freeze them!' I do!
when I get seeds and know I can't start them right away, the envelopes are put in a small zip loc bag and stored in the freezer until I am ready to go!

Paul's Glory
In defense of Paul's Glory! Paul's Glory arrived via overnight air carrier (Chicago - Geneva) in May 1993. Needless to say ( I'm jinxt! :bd: ) the package was lost and found after 9 days on a Friday. The plant inspection people in Geneva kindly mailed it Express mail (cost another 120$) to me....

Hi Danny,
Sky Dancer is one of my favorite Hostas. It is a slow grower at our altitude but I hope that eventually it will develop those beautiful ruffles! Will you have the streaker tissue cultured? it is fantastic!

PPAF Plants
Pieter, John, For a plant breeder who puts in a lot of time and effort into developing a new and special plant, it is understandable that he wants some protection and has it patened. However, we could expect that these plants are superior and of course, we ARE informed that they are patened. For sma...

PPAF Plants
I have several PPAF plants growing in my garden, that were bought before they were PPAF or had a patent attached. Revolution, Stained Glass, Victory, Orange Marmelade, Cookie Crumbs and quite a few more were meant for propagation and are now sitting there waiting. All cookie crumb plants died, Revol...

Thank you Chris! Now I do wish I had followed my instincts and destroyed the Hostas when I fist suspected the Virus. That first year I was so paranoid and suspected every blemish on a Hosta to be the virus. We hardly ever get away without late frosts in spring. There are varying degrees of damage an...

Charla, No, I did not have the plants tested again. Here in Switzerland, they can't be tested. By the time I can visit the US the leaves would be gone anyway. the sad part is, most people don't know about the virus. I have been preaching about HVX ever since I found out about the threat 3 years ago,...
