Re: Sick acer palmatum

Once JM's soil gets too wet they go down hill quickly. I don't know if digging it up would save it or not, but may be worth a try. Here I always raise them by about a third of the rootball when planted. Then I "terrace" with rocks and soil. In this climate we never know whether we will be in the mid...

Re: Mature Hosta?

Pieter, How much did that S&S weigh? What did you use to get it out of the ground? Wow!

Dash, I don't divide my hosta as they will then look like juveniles for the next few years. I like those mature clumps.

Re: New home, new gardens....My first Hallson order!

Since you are ordering from Chris you have that important issue out of the way. Next...be sure to prepare your beds well. That was the biggest mistake I made starting out. I skimped on preparation in all the excitement. You will find lots of information on this forum. You are already on the right tr...

Re: So many new hostas on the market...

I used to want (and often get) the latest hosta out, but after the whole HVX thing got rolling I've stopped buying any hosta except here and that is rare as well for various reasons. For one thing this area of the world is just a hostile place to grow hosta and the ones that have done well have been...

Re: Old leaves- compost

Thy, I actually clean up my leaves in the spring because 1) I am lazy, and 2) I think it is better for the plants\shrubs to have cover for the winter. I chop them up, put them in trashcans with holes in the bottom and wait. If I did this job in the fall I would have beautiful fluffy leafmold now! Bu...

Re: Eyes!

Hey Ginger! I have eyes showing too. I turned the pots on their sides during the snow so the hosta wouldn't rot but yesterday I discovered that the eyes and they were growing up  as in sideways when I set the pots up (yes I have been less than diligent about my backyard. Have you had this happe...

Re: All are smaller or dead

The happiest heuchera I have is a Peach Melba that I bought in a 4" pot. I couldn't decide where to place it so I sat it near the end of a raised bed and promptly forgot about it. Now 3 years later it is lush, beautiful and very happy-and still in the 4" pot. I'm thinking that the better the drainag...

hummm?? I've never sheared mine and never noticed that they need it, but maybe I'm not looking close enough. If it looks wonderful why do anything to it? Just my 2 cents.

Re: I just do not know

Pia, I'm sorry your hostas aren't unfurling yet and spring hasn't sprung there, but I can tell you that 59 degrees F sounds wonderful. We aren't even getting close to that at night. It was 78F last night at midnight. I want spring too, but going back the other way. A vacation...sounds like it could ...

Yours looks wonderful. :D Quite elegant.

Mine would look pretty good too if I could keep the little guy clean (I have him in a pot so you'd think I could keep him reigned in a bit). He is always playing in the mud no matter where I place him. How do you keep yours so clean?

You are amazingly clever and have a great eye for design. I just love your gardens. I look forward to seeing them evolve.

I also want one of those fountains! Very nice!
