Planting depth

After not seeing the growth leap I'd expected last summer in many of my plants, I have to wonder if they're planted too deeply. How far should I have to scrape down to see or feel an eye at this time of the year? An inch? Half-inch? The reason I ask, I have one Sum & Substance that flourishes year a...

Re: Temperature check

I just saw a piece on the Weather Channel regarding current and future weather patterns across the U.S. Where it's been warmer in the eastern two-thirds of the nation in Dec. and Jan., February will bring colder temps to those regions. In the West, where it's been colder than normal, Feb. will bring...

Re: Labels

Pia, I may not rake too many of the leaves this year (for a change). It does save on mulch and the plants are filling in so much, that you don't see too much of the ground between the plants anyways. Raking the oak leaves, then shredding them and finally returning them to the beds would be ideal, bu...

Re: Hosta of the Day - Lakeside Cha Cha

That's some amazing growth after one year! I think I need some of your dirt.... or do you fertilize regularly?

Re: Labels

Regarding labels, I never realized how tricky moving the hose would be with all of those label markers in the ground.... let alone raking up the leaves! It was hard enough not mashing hosta leaves, but with all of the added markers, I felt I was running through a maze every time I had to water!! I t...

Forcing potted hostas?

Hey all,

I was thinking about bringing a couple pots in from outdoors and forcing them to wake up. What are the dangers or pitfalls of doing this?

Re: Tassel Fern & Hardy Japanese Holly Ferns

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the background info. In comparing the two with pics online, it does look like mine might be the fortunei after all, given the size of the leaves and space between them. I sure hope so! I guess we'll know come next spring!

Hosta companions.... FERNS!

Hi all, Lowe's is clearing out all of their live plants and I picked up some attractive gallon-sized ferns today for a mere $1.75 per plant: Tassel Fern (Polystichum polybepharum) and Japanese Holly Fern (Cyrtomium falcatum). Does anyone have any experience with these ferns? Despite being hardy only...

What a great lookin' plant! Is Snake Eyes as vigorous as Striptease? Does it get as large?
Anyone know of a good resource online to purchase a healthy Snake Eyes?

Re: Labels

I also used Avery #15661 clear labels (1" x 4") with my laser printer and they still look new 2 years later. If you don't have a laser printer, simply take your Excel file on a flash drive to Kinkos or FedEx and use their printers for a small fee. The uniformity of all your markers really looks clas...

Re: Hostas introduced before 2000

Hi Chris, They carry both of those varieties so I'll have to see what looks good. The prices I quoted were the original prices, so taking the 30% or 40% off, I think it'd be a good buy, depending on how large they are. I wish I'd had time this afternoon to return to the nursery since we're expecting...

Re: Pic of the Day--Climax

Those are some beautiful pic of Climax! Mine from Chris isn't nearly that large after 2 years, but I'm hoping that next spring it will leap. I've currently got it in a semi-raised bed under an old maple tree. I think I'll move it next spring.... along with a few others there.

Hostas introduced before 2000

Hey all, My favorite local hosta nursery here in KC on the Missouri side of the state line is going out of business :-( They primarily have a lot of older varieties, from what I can tell. All plants are in gallon containers and are currently discounted 30 or 40% off. Which older ones should I go buy...

I've already checked the pics in the Library. I was just hoping that some of you had some better pics because some of the shots I've seen with all of the Daily Hosta posts have been terrific! Linda, what kind of help do you need in resizing your pics? Feel free to message me privately.... Kevin in KC

I don't grow September Sun, but have had this Polar Moon for many years. It's always been a favorite of mine.
