Re: So many new hostas on the market...
I buy hostas for their look, not their name. If a hosta looks very similar to one (or ones) I already own, I don't buy it. I listen to my local hosta dealer (nurseryman). If he advises against a certain hosta because it is not proven, or doesn't grow well, I take his advice. If he says "you will lik...

Re: Hosta living quilt
Oscar Cross of Hilltop Farms is one of our members. I think he started forcing them out of dormancy around mid January. We just got the OK to set up our display at the botanical center. That will introduce 100's of people to mini hosta. Cool!

The Greater Ozarks Hosta Society had this booth set up at the Springfield lawn and garden show this weekend. Pretty neat don't you think? http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab19/swmogardens/100_7747.jpg http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab19/swmogardens/100_7746-1.jpg http://i845.photobucket.com/al...

Re: Popular groundcovers around Hostas
I use Vinca all over my SWMO, zone 6 garden. It grows fast, and chokes out weeds. Midsize hosta, say Halcyon or bigger, do fine. Smaller hostas get over-run. I really like it.

Hosta game 2010
Can you "crack the code"? The first letter of each answer, in order, will spell out something every hosta lover should own. If the answer is two words, only the first letter of the first word is used. The answers are all hostas. You might want to print this off to solve it. When you get the answer, ...

How about Roundup?
Can I broadcast spray roundup over large hosta beds to kill weeds? Will it harm hostas? How about early spring? Anyone have success using roundup to control weeds?

Does Preen work?
I have never tried it. I use a lot of mulch, and weed by hand. I've often wondered, will Preen stop walnut, maple, and oak seedlings? Will it affect my hostas? Does it last all year? Can I just throw it on top of the mulch? Anyone have good, or bad, results with Preen?

Has your garden ever been on tour?
I've had mine on several tours. I have enjoyed it every time. Last time I bought a giant tub of ice cream at Sams, some hersheys syrup, sprinkles, small clear plastic cups, and had self serve sundaes. It was cheap, easy, and people loved it. We had about 75 visitors. It makes all the effort worthwhi...

Are you a member?
I was just elected president of the Greater Ozarks hosta society. I am curious, how many of you are members of your local hosta society? And, can you recommend some fun things for us to do in 2011?
Thanks, SWMO

You say LEER-EE-O-PEE, I say LI-RYE-O-PEE. I used to pronounce Paradigm as PAR-A-DIDJUM, until a friend said "it's PAR-A-DIME" and the boy am I stupid light bulb lit in my head. I still don't think I pronounce EUONYMUS correctly.

Re: One of my fall favorites
My Fire Island has been in that pot since spring 2009. I use 50/50 Miracle gro potting mix and shredded pine bark mulch. Over winter I tip it on it's side on the north side of my home. It is in fairly heavy shade, very little direct sun. I'll have to try one of your Paradise Islands.
