Re: Popular groundcovers around Hostas

Wow Melissa, what a pretty setting you have there! I agree, Creeping Jenny makes a good ground cover. And yes, it will go crazy if you give it a chance, but it can be yanked out fairly easily. Like Melissa says, it can easily be pulled out of one area and plopped down in another, it transplants easi...

Re: Planning Veggie Garden??

Good grief! NO! We are getting 3 inches of snow tonight! :frosty: Who's thinking about veggie gardens? (Well, Park Seed has been sending me emails, so I guess they've started thinking about it!) Not much planning needed here, it will be the usual culprits . . . tomatoes, cukes, peppers, zucchini, wi...

Hi Rose Marie! You are going to LOVE your P-Touch labels. I use the ones that say TZ on them, they are the really durable ones. Some of mine are nearly 10 years old and they still look good. I haven't had any of them fade or peel off. My P-Touch labeler doesn't hook up to my computer. :( I have to u...

Re: How about Roundup?

I use Roundup frequently. I've never sprayed an entire bed. I use a pump sprayer and spray the weeds directly. Don't get it on hostas or any other desirables because it WILL harm them. Like Linda said, if you get it on them, wash it off well. I have wild grape  and garlic mustard  that c...

Re: Does Preen work?

I use Preen early in the spring to keep as many seeds as possible from germinating, because once they've germinated the Preen doesn't have any effect on them. I sometimes remember to do it again after the wild cherry seeds fall from the tree because every darn one of them sprouts! In my beds it has ...

Re: Bird ID? Large...

Wow, that is really cool!! Great pictures . . . the fluffy legs crack me up! :D In researching the hawk that we found I looked at lots of information on Coopers Hawk. I'd rule that out for yours. The breast, tail and head don't match. I would agree with red-tail hawk. What a cool thing to witness.

Re: Coopers Hawk?

Thanks! After looking on the web I was leaning towards Coopers and Sharp-Shinned also. I was leaning towards Coopers because I got a good look at his legs while I was down there cutting away the net and he didn't seem to have the extra-long legs of the Sharp-Shinned. But then again, since this was m...

Re: Me & Willie

I finally looked at the video. You are both doing great! I remember one of the early ones you posted where Willie kept going around the obstacles rather than actually performing at each one. He's sure come a long way and it looks like he's having a ball!

Coopers Hawk?

Okay, I need all you bird people to help me identify this guy. We put a 6-foot high net fence around our garden to keep the deer out. It works well and the fence is nearly invisible. But a couple weeks ago a this big bird was swooping down, talons extended, to attack something in or around the garde...

It's fun seeing the progression of your pictures from spring through fall. I love that last Autumn picture with all the gold leaves scattered on the ground. :D

Re: Just some pretty photos

Beautiful pictures!! I don't have much green left in my gardens. Lots of pretty yellows, golds and shades of orange as everything is shutting down for the season. Like LindaP, I am expecting our first real freeze later this week. Today we have winds whipping around like crazy, what doesn't get blown...

Re: Yuki Japanese film update

How cool!! So they are all finished filming and in post-production now? I hope they weren't to hard on your gardens. In the Gallery section of the site I loved the winter pictures of your garden, they look so peaceful. And in the Gallery under "On Set", there is a picture of your pretty bridge, but ...

Re: Rainbarrels

What a great set-up, Karma! I love how you have them linked together to capture more water. I have one rain barrel (80 gal) at each gutter and it's amazing how fast they fill up. One afternoon shower could fill many more than I have. We have talked about building in an overflow to another barrel in ...

Re: Time to Start the 2010 Veggie Garden?

Hey Karma! Enjoy those tomatoes, mine didn't do so well. We enjoyed plenty of zucchini, cucumbers and yellow summer squash. Like me, they fizzle out in the late summer heat, so they are finished now. I still have all sorts of peppers . . . banana, bell, hot, etc. I always have good luck with peppers...

Re: Ravioli Appetizers

That sounds delish! I always like those "fried ravioli" appetizers at many restaurants, but I don't often order them and I've never tried to make them because the "fried" part makes them not-so-healthy. Doing it your way they would be healthier and still delicious! I will definitely try this (but pr...

Hey Karma!! I thought of this old post when I read a news article today . . . I'm not sure exactly where in the PNW you live . . . but did you know that in Washington State (as well as Utah and Colorado), it's illegal to collect the rainwater from your roof?? Apparently it's an old law about diverti...

Re: Beech blight aphid boogie

Chris, I saw the little cottony things floating in the air and like you, I realized they weren't exactly floating, but were actually flying. It is some type of aphid in the family of "Wooly Aphids." When you see them in the summer they are moving from their Primary Host to their Secondary Host. They...

Re: Zebra Ornamental Grass

Good advice from Chris. I dug up two large Zebra Grass this spring, split them and replanted them. They paused for a moment then took off again and now they are doing great. I was lucky because it was springtime and still cool and frequent rain. Yours might struggle in the heat of summer, but they'l...
