Re: Olive Bailey Langdon not doing well - root problems?
Thanks, Chris. I dig 'em up and replanted them in a different location and not as deep. Now, we wait.

Olive Bailey Langdon not doing well - root problems?
We planted an Olive Bailey Langdon in 2013 expecting it to turn into this huge, specimen. Well, it didn't do too well and this year, it's still doing poorly so I dug it up. It's expanded to 5 plants so, it's not dead but the roots feel funny, kindof lifeless, limp and dry. There are also a bunch of ...

Re: Daylilies (?) at the river's waterline
Well, I see that I haven't been on here for quite some time. I was a bit concerned about the invasiveness of what I was initially looking at so I kept looking around...should have checked back here ! We did get some Louisiana River Iris - we planted on and in a couple months, it seemed to be doing r...

Re: Daylilies (?) at the river's waterline
Thanks. That does look like the plant. Maybe I should keep an eye on the upstream neighbor's plants to see just how invasive this is. With spreading by rhizomes and seeds, it seems like it could get out of control pretty easily....maybe I shouldn't bee too hasty;) Here are a couple links if somebody...

Daylilies (?) at the river's waterline
We just got back from a kayak trip down the Conestoga River. We past a couple places that had what looked to me like daylilies growing right at the water's edge. We had seen them before and asked a guy what they were and I thought he said "water lilies" but, that's a lily pad - this look just like d...

Re: Hosta and Goldenrain tree
Definitely helpful information! I was actually thinking about planting a couple of them on that bank over time. Maybe I should just stick with dogwood or cherry. I kindof wanted "something different" - but, perhaps the reason for the old standby trees is that they just work;) We almost never see any...

Hosta and Goldenrain tree
I just want to say that I appreciate the info I've gleaned from here over the past 2 years or so. I've learned a lot of things that I didn't know I didn't know;) We have a "host bank" along our driveway. At the top of the bank are old white pine trees. We've been working on this for a few years and ...

Re: Todays Blooms-pic heavy
Actually, the pictures aren't that bad...they are all in sharp focus and the colors are good. It just seems like they have a softness to them...sometimes photographers intentionally do that for effect using a small amount of Vaseline on a clear filter (the clear filter is 'cuz nobody really wants to...

Re: ID HELP
Upload the picture to flickr, then past a link to the flickr site into the message. In Flickr, use the "BB Code" option. That lets you post a medium image on the board but, if people want more detail, they can click on the image to get access to the original image.

Re: Todays Blooms-pic heavy
I don't think your camera is really that bad...colors are good and focus is good - might just be a little film on the lens. Try some lens cleaner on it, you might end up with "a new camera";) Use a lint-free cloth, not a paper towel or cotton - a micro-fiber cloth or lens tissue that comes with the ...

Re: Differences between LS Black Satin vs Ventricosa
My first thought when I saw that picture was that it looks exactly like what I've been calling a Royal Standard...actually, I have no clue...in fact, I'm probably wrong. We moved here 3 years ago and they came with the place. Royal Standard is also an old hosta....seems to fit with the maturity of t...

Re: Dinner time in the hosta garden
Our squirrel population is a bit high...bordering on out of control. We have 30 chestnut and 10 or so walnut and pecan trees...the definitely eat good here! We don't have any rabbits...we've talked about it, seems rather odd. We have a couple owls around too...maybe that's why.

Re: Garden mapping - using a GPS?
I have a scale drawing in Visio and I could print it with grid lines. That would probably work best.
I messed with the GPS a bit more over the weekend...3 meter accuracy is pretty good but it's still pretty far off. I could probably do better with just a printed copy.

Garden mapping - using a GPS?
Recently, I got a new phone and the GPS on it is really pretty good. I've been wondering if I could use it to map the yard. The accuracy isn't good enough to map individual plants like each hosta or anything that specific but, how about mapping where the trees are and where other "features" are? I h...

Re: Growing hostas under trees - which trees work?
The water table is an interesting piece to the puzzle - Our hosta garden is 10' or a little more above the level of the river which is 400' away. We definitely do not live in a dry area...in August when yards in local developments are brown, ours is still green. I think there are a lot of factors in...

Re: Growing hostas under trees - which trees work?
Well, we have a bunch of hosta growing under pine trees. I'm not sure what the root structure of a pine tree is like but I know there are quite a few roots rather close to the surface...makes planting them a pain. The hosta seem to be doing well but I can't really compare the growth there with growt...

Re: Southern Blight?
Oh, so this is two separate issues? Now that complicates things;) Well in that case, I just did a preventative application of Bayer Advanced to avoid a recurrence of the Southern Blight. This week, the watering is pretty much out of my hands...it's not gonna dry out much till the middle of next week.

Re: Southern Blight?
I had something similar last year that I ended up calling Southern Blight (correctly or not). I did spray things pretty heavily with Bayer Advanced this morning...wanted to knock this down before it messed up the garden like it did last year. Here are two pictures from last year. This particular pla...

I've done some research and here are a few links - partly for my lookup, partly to share;) http://www.apsnet.org/edcenter/intropp/lessons/fungi/Basidiomycetes/Pages/SouthernBlight.aspx - rather scary, thorough, scientific description http://www.extension.umn.edu/yardandgarden/ygbriefs/p152southernbl...
