This is the first time I have heard/read that, Chris. What is the source?

Re: Sport on my "green" hosta

I believe Fortunei Hyacinthina is now called just 'Hyacinthina'. It does frequently sport. Your "sport" sounds more like an anomaly which will not repeat next year but, for your sake, I hope I am wrong. Last year I had streaked sports of 'Sweet Sunshine' and 'Popcorn' and separated them. This year b...

Re: Cutting off hosta flowers as the stalk appears.

The expert opinion (from George Schmid, the author of "The Genus Hosta") is to wait until the first flower or two open before cutting the scapes off; doing it earlier has a negative effect on the plant. He offered this opinion in another hosta forum sometime within the last year.

Re: Are daylilies of unknown parentage taboo?

I think we have entirely too many registered daylilies already and hundreds if not thousands of them indistinguishable from others. I use my seedling hostas that I do not consider worthy of introduction (too similar to others already registered) as freebies to good customers if they ask for them. Wh...

Are you willing to risk killing everything else in the pond as well? What about overflow? Is the pond contained?

It does not look like Microbiota to me. Try googling for Thujopsis dolobrata, although that doesn't look right to me, either.

Re: 'Little Sunspot' sport

The antifungal powders appear to, in my experience, delay the drying of the cut, so I recommend applying them after the surface is already dry. Personally I prefer not to use fungicides (although sometimes I do) because they are highly toxic.

Re: 'Little Sunspot' sport

Whenever I cut through the crown, I lay the divisions in a shallow pan so that the cut surfaces are out of the water and facing up, while the roots are kept moist, and then wait until the cut surfaces are dry before replanting or potting up. Kind of like allowing a scab to form over a wound to keep ...

Re: is this a seedling-could it be my lost baby bunting?

The leaves look too ovate (not round enough) but that could be an immaturity issue. On the other hand, would a seedling have reached that size without your noticing it sooner?

Re: Could this be H. Abby???

More likely to be 'Abby' than 'Crusader', methinks.

A size reference always helps! Consider putting a familiar object in the photo (a playing card, a dollar bill, a matchbook...).

I am thinking of a stray piece of another plant getting mixed in while potting up or planting, as the likeliest explanation.

Re: How do you rate the Blue Mammoth Hosta?

I'm with Chris (again). It sounds like space may be an issue for you so I would also go for the smaller one (BM). I also agree with Jim that we have an awful lot of "big blues". Personally I like 'Bressingham Blue' (but that was not the question) more.

The problem with using a larger pot, like Pia suggests, is that it may be too heavy to turn!

Re: Question re: Burying Pots into Soil because of Tree Roo

Pot-in-pot works well but those large pots can be costly. It is sufficient to use just one pot but you must remember to rotate the pot at least twice a year to break any tree roots that have begun to invade. The pot size will be adequate for a few years since 'Sagae' is not a fast grower. When the h...

It is just amazing how quickly hostas recover from frost damage. Three hard frosts at 7-10 day intervals is quite another matter! Nevertheless, this is what it looks like here now.

Re: Sports and Frequency

According to George Schmid, one should not presume all solid-colored "sports" from one hosta to be identical, nor necessarily reversions back to "mama". We recently had a discussion about this at Hostapix, in reference to gold sports out of montana 'Aureomarginata'. My view is that, while the gold s...
