Re: Are these two hostas virused?

Pieter, I had a look at your other post. I see what you mean.

I, like you, thought these hosta must be virused. But now, I have my doubts, and as you said, "new growth will tell."

Thanks for the education Pieter!

Re: Are these two hostas virused?

Thanks Pieter! Since my post I have received more information on these plants. They were from a horticultural society sale. Also, they were from a very experienced and educated gardener. She told me that several years ago the two hostas looked similar as they do above. Test strips were used at that ...

Are these two hostas virused?

I don't see any new posts here on this Virus X forum so I am not sure whether I will receive a reply.

I purchased two hosta from a horticultural plant sale. My first question is: is it possible that the markings I now see two and a half weeks later were not there when I purchased them?

Re: I LOVE my Great Expectations!!!!!

Hi Chris. It has come to my attention that my photo (the first one in this thread) is being used on multiple websites to sell this hosta. Can you remove the photo, or at least shrink it to a smaller size so it will not be repeatedly used without my permission?

Re: Questions regarding repotting hosta

Good idea kHT---to buy soil/media in the fall or earlier. Sometimes the spring is early and there isn't much available. Spring can be so unpredictable! Wonderful that your hostas are emerging!

Re: Questions regarding repotting hosta

That makes sense kHT! Also, repotting early may mean that the potting media may be too moist for that time of the year. That could mean rotting roots. And I certainly do not need to tend to hosta pots that have emerged early! Even though I do miss them and am excited for the garden to begin to displ...

Re: Questions regarding repotting hosta

There is lots of good information here about repotting from Chris and Diana. I am still growing a lot of hosta in pots after all these years. Now that the weather is improving, I have one more question:

Can pots be repotted when the hosta is dormant? What would me the pros and cons of this?

Re: Hosta Afternoon Delight

I am afraid I was just visiting. I enjoyed Montreal very much and am hoping to return next year. If I do, I will definitely be going back to the botanical gardens. Let us know if you find a picture of Afternoon Delight from your visit. It would great to see it earlier on in the season.

Re: Hosta Afternoon Delight

Glad Rags does have a lot of similarity to Afternoon Delight. Looks like a lovely hosta. I believe that AD is a large and GR is a medium. What I think is unusual about Afternoon Delight, is that the yellow margin is so intense for September 1st and for it being grown in dappled shade. Generally, I f...

Hosta Afternoon Delight

This hosta caught my eye at the Montreal Botanical Gardens. It's a High Noon sport, and the originator is Mark Zilis/L. Lombardo (2003). I gather it is not readily available. But it's a standout! Re: Pic of the Day--Color Glory

I see from the postings that people are having difficulty growing this one, but I don't see it on Don Rawson's "Difficult-to-Grow Hostas" list.

Photo taken September 1, 2016---in the shade garden of the Montreal Botanical Gardens. I thought it was quite beautiful.

Re: Hosta of the Day "Ventricosa Aureomarginata"- Post Your

Isn't Phil and Gayle's plant (above) a beauty? This photo was taken at the Montreal Botanical Gardens September 1, 2016. It seems to really stand out---maybe because it is surrounded by green? Looks like it has held up pretty well for this time of year.

Re: Daily Hosta #2 - 'Janet' - Add your pics

Here is a mature specimen. Photo taken September 1, 2016 at the Montreal Botanical Gardens. It doesn't seem to have lightened up much. Perhaps that is because is it in quite a bit of shade?

Took this photo at the Montreal Botanical Gardens. Royal Standard makes a nice mass planting, especially when it's flowering.

Re: Questions regarding repotting hosta

Hi Diana. Thanks for your input! Great to hear about your first hand experience! I think then that you agree with one of the points that Chris made---that one should not repot into a larger pot later on in the gardening season. Seems like the media will just remain too wet for too long. But you are ...

Re: Questions regarding repotting hosta

Thanks Chris for some great information!!!! So, to recap, in Zones 6 or lower, repotting can be done up to mid or late summer. But if one is repotting towards the latter part of the growing season, one needs to repot using a pot that is not too large. The reason for this is that the roots are not gr...

Questions regarding repotting hosta

I have found some information on repotting hosta but wish I could find more detailed information. If you know of a source of information, please let me know. Maybe you could help me with some questions I have. I know that the right kind of potting media is important. But my questions are: (1) When c...

Re: Calendar art

Almost is a very nice hosta indeed! Aurora's Glow has such interesting margins. First Frost---I love that hosta! I had had an opportunity to purchase a good size Luna Moth for a decent price and passed on it! Now every time I see a photo of it I am reminded of my poor decision. Pretty group picture ...
