Re: Seedling variability

most hosta are hybrids so you will get some variation. over time you will want to study the lines to get you where you want to go. i have alot of it memorized so i can identify traits as i see them. and thus remember what i was after at the time. i use google docs to record some crosses. others i ju...

Re: What to do If I start Seedlings Next Year

sometimes it takes the right maturity and the right weather year. i have a krossa regal seedling and it is fertile. I also have a fertile lancifolia seedling. I've grown op f2 of them but haven't done much crossing with them either. maybe they are worthwhile breeders, ....but the jury is out. .........

have the read the paper called, 24 Anthocyanins of the genus of Hosta and their impacts on tepal colors?
its only a few cultivars but you might be able to find it useful for your needs.

Re: My best "pink" flowered hosta to date

sounds like quite the challenge, i've been working on fragrance, i'm starting to make some progress on that.

reds sound tricky, are you selecting for anthocyanin type or are you selfing to refine the color

Re: Question about Hosta 'Oshima Silk' parentage

Not being a scientist I can only speculate. As a breeder I always have more questions than answers. Is the expression of anthocyanin controlled by dominance? Is it a lottery of what part of the plant a seedling wants to store its unique blend of anthocyanin? By selection and perseverance I know I ca...

Re: Question about Hosta 'Oshima Silk' parentage

you might want to get those in some new soil to perk them up. to combat algae i always sprinkle dry mix on the top to dry it up and block its light source. not being of pychnophylla parentage might be a plus if you want blue flowers. a high presence of the malvadin anthocyanin will probably push the...

those look like ventricosa youngsters to me.

it those flowers produce very large pods. and almost every flower has a pod then it most sure would be. ventricosa is unique in the fact that it has internal pollination.
