Brave Amherst

So it's my fault shouldn't have planted it by the telephone pole but didn't think they would dig it up to replace it anytime soon either but there's a big hole where it use to be so now that I've had it for over 10 years so it was huge. Anyways looking for help to replace it, not finding much online...

Re: Hosta 'Mowing'

I'm always amazed by the idiotic fairy tales this being one of hostas dumbest. Heres whats really going to happen. You mow, the hosta has to reenergise because you just stressed it so it starts to grow again using all the energy saved for the whole summer. Next year you might and I stress might get ...

Re: My wife wanted a hosta garden

It starts just like this though. First you pick up a few the first year but the second you have some spaces that need filled. Third year your moving patios, decks, fences and such to make more room were theres shade (and don't say you haven't). Fourth year your planting more trees. Fifth year your u...

Re: My wife wanted a hosta garden

You'd be considered a newbie at this point :D When you get to a 100 you'd be considered a freshman. 500 and then you might be considered a hosta gardener. 1000+ then you'd be considered a hosta freak. It's a good start for a single day though. Lets see where your at the end of next summer. PS I stop...

Re: How soon can a hosta be split? - Sum and Substance

This hosta is ment to be huge, think about this before you do this. If you have caught the hosta bug you will regret doing this when you take a shovel out in a few years because you already have this one and want to make more room. That S&S is tiny compaired to what it will be in a few years

Re: Curious about Hosta genetics

Most of us can answer this question, if you've divided a hosta and put the 2 in different parts of the yard 1 will almost always outperform the other. I have a guac. I divided a few years ago and the smaller division is twice the size now than the larger and they are only about 6 feet away. Reason ,...

Re: Older Hostas

generally the parent is registered before the sport or seedling, it's just not that common otherwise.. Great Expectations might be the worst hosta ever on the market it can be extremely fussy, a few can get it to grow but most of the time you can expect it to die, it's a waste of money and time, whi...

Re: Older Hostas

August Moon in 96 and Sept. Sun 85 am I missing something. Not sure I've heard of a sport registered before the parent??? You can make an arguement for a lot of hostas being oldies Patriot was registered 20 years ago (surprise). Aksarben (don't like this hosta I'm from Colorado) over 20 years ago an...

Re: Older Hostas

I've been collecting the oldies for years and it's not as easy as it sounds a lot have just fallen off the hosta map but this will help. Theres some like White Ray and Resonance which most people I'd imagion haven't heard about but are nice hostas and have been around for probably 35 years or so and...

I don't remember storms like this here since I was a kid before this area before the drought started, I'm not complaining though it's been wonderful but with all thunde...

Re: What do you think?

It has good substance and yes it's fertile but I haven't had a chance to grow seeds from it I have a whacky squirrel who likes to pull seeds off my hostas and last year it took them off that one and the hostas in the area but it did have seeds on it. This year I have to figure out how to keep him aw...

Re: What do you think?

I'll wait a while before I do anything but it's a seedling from a 2 unnamed and unregistered streaked hostas from Mary Chastain and Bob Solberg. Marys as the dad and Bobs as the mom. So far I like it better than mom or dad but it's only on it's forth year but it has a great pedigree.

Re: Hallsons Spring Trade 2011 **Received**

Sweetee sent me Swoosh, Winter Snow (put it by Mountain Snow) and Mikado (an oldie but a hosta that I've wanted for quite a while). Thanks a lot. Mine went out on Monday but had the wife send it out and shes not sure where she put the tracking # but should be there by tomorrow hopefully.
