They're my favorites. too, Tigger. I've never been to Winterthur gardens, but I've seen mature specimens in the Asian section of the National Arboretum (which is lovely, by the way, if you get a chance to visit). Theirs are in partial shade, so they're growing more open structure than mine. Another ...

Those look great, Doris. It's funny how popular echinacea have become in the last few years. Seems like there are at least a few new interesting varieties each year. I never grew them till I moved to this old house, where there were drifts of them (plain pink) in the back yard. I didn't think much o...

Pruning small ornamental trees
I've got two small Asian trees - stewartia and paperbark maple - that have developed twin central leaders. Both seem healthy and shouldn't grow huge, but I wonder if I should subordinate one leader for proper form, as would be appropriate for larger trees. They're currently 5' and 8' tall, respectiv...

Tiger grass?
Anyone have experience growing Tiger Grass (Thysanolaena maxima)? It's supposed to be a reasonable (non-invasive) substitute for bamboo. Looks very tropical.

No fragrance?
My oriental lilies are blooming now, but they have little or no fragrance. Years past they've perfumed the whole garden. Anyone else experienced this?
I keep telling my wife that this has been a strange year for gardening. She just says, "That's what you say every year."

Dee, I don't think transplanting will be any problem this fall. Wait till the leaves drop, then try to get as large a rootball as possible. The roots of woodies should actually be exposed near the trunk - just look at trees in the forest. Lots of times the root flare gets covered during successive n...

Azalea?
Azalea 'Mandarin Lights' is one of various "Lights" varieties bred for cold climates. Try a web search to see what other colors are available.

damaged lily
Hello, all. I've got a 3 year old oriental lily that's turned brown & black at the top. Can someone tell me if this is disease or insect damage, and what to do to correct it?
Thanks-

Ginger from seed?
I found some European ginger seeds online. Does anyone have experience growing ginger from seed? Easy? Hard? Suggestions?
